Ripple editing . . . uh?

Post by Killer133 »

I cannot get to grips with Ripple Editing. I've read the limited info about it in the User Guide and watched a couple of Videos on youtube. I wonder if anyone has some time to go over a few points . . . . please . . .

Let's say I've got two clips, Clip A and Clip B.

1. I place Clip A on my video track, and it starts at 00:00:00:00

2. I leave Ripple Editing OFF and drag Clip B to the start of my video track. Clip B is now placed at 00:00:00:00 and Clip A is pushed to the right, now starting after Clip B.

3. I now start a new project and Enable Ripple editing by clicking the drop-down for Ripple Editing Options and click "Enable Ripple Editing" (If I again click the drop-down to view, "Enable Ripple Editing" is checked).

4. I place Clip A on my video track, and it starts at 00:00:00:00

5. I leave Ripple Editing ON and drag Clip B to the start of my video track. Clip B is now placed at 00:00:00:00 and Clip A is pushed to the right, now starting after Clip B.

My (first) question is: what's the difference?

My second question is regarding Overlay tracks. If I repeat the above, but for an overlay track, the clips are placed one on top of the other, no matter which options I have set.

I'm obviously missing something in my understanding, so if anyone would be kind enough to help out I'd appreciate it.

With ripple editing the top track is the "master" - you can do whatever you want in the top track whether ripple editing is enabled or not - but all other tracks on which you have also closed the padlock are now locked to the top track -- after you have enabled ripple editing the clips in other tracks will move to keep them in the same relative position to the clip in the top track - so with ripple editing enabled you will not be able to add clips in the overlay track if it means one of the clips needs to move relative to the top track

Ripple editing basically keeps the relationship between the top track and the other tracks and you can add whatever you want in the top track - not between overlay/title/audio tracks

so as you have seen you can add titles etc. at the start of the top track without losing the relationship between top track and others

it is a bit of a black art - but if you could lock the positions between clips on any single track - how would you edit anything ?

Hi Brian - thank you very much for the quick and clear response. I've just tried the things you've said and (of course) they worked exactly as you'd said. I think the issue is more with the way I'm using VideoStudio and the way I expect it to work. I'm a lot happier now and shall do some experimenting later today.

Thanks again.
