auto numbering / labelling on images

Hi, thousand apologies etc. if this is either obvious or has been covered elsewhere...
I would like to numerically label batches of images, so define the font, size, colour and position of the label on the image, then have a script apply the numbering in sequence, say from 1 to 100. Obviously doing this manually is quite laborious when a hundred or more photos are required.
Is this possible using any existing tool?
