File format mismatch X9.5

Post by Jim Pickles »

Apologies for starting a new topic - but none of the existing ones on file format mismatch seemed appropriate (Corel VideoStudio X9.5, Windows 10).

Yesterday for the first time I had a file format mismatch error when trying to read in a file, which had been downloaded and saved to disk from my Panasonic HC-VX870M. The file format was .MTS (.m2t), BDAV, 1920*1080 at 50.000 fps AVC CABAC.

It was part of a series of clips, and earlier and later ones shot that day read in and edited OK. Media players etc play the file OK, and I was able to reformat it on a Windows 8.1 computer with Windows Movie Maker, and then edit the MP4 output.

So with luck it may have just been a one-off - maybe an error in the camera. But I want to be sure it wont happen again if I can, because next time it may be a precious unrepeatable clip, and I may not have access to the Windows 8.1 computer to reformat it.

Does anyone know how I can track down what went wrong, so minimise the chances of it happening again?

I also tried a few "free" Windows 10 movie editors so I could do the pre-formatting if necessary on my Windows 10 computer, but the ones I tried would not read in .MTS files.

Many thanks, Jim.

If the earlier and later clips from the same camera on the same day gave no trouble, and presumably had exactly the same properties as the problem clip, then there had to be something that went wrong with just that one clip. I would probably have done much the same as you and reformatted it, though I probably would have used a third party converter like Format Factory to mpeg-4 with very similar properties to the original.

Hopefully, someone else might have a more helpful suggestion which might pinpoint the problem...

Thanks. I tried Format Factory, but it doesnt read .mts files. So I'll keep looking. There must be something that VS needs to see in the file, that Movie Maker and the players do not care about. Though from now on I will record in .mp4 format which I now realise is more universal.

Jim.

(Edited to add the will record in mp4 format).

Format Factory 3.6 reads my .MTS files from my Panasonic GH2. However, you should change video capture to mp4 as you posted.

On Win10, use VLC to watch and convert the video to another name, then use VideoStudio to edit.
The size of the output can be larger.
