Hi everyone. I have had an issue with the Smudge tool since forever. I would like to know if others are having the same issue.
6000x3800 file. 300 dpi. 134meg. sRGB.
Here's the problem. (Happens on all there of my computers). Open a file. Smudge Brush. Size 100. Hardness 90. Step 1. Density 60. Thickness 100. Rotation 0. Opacity 68. Try the brush. Slight changes but only slight. Now change ONLY the Opacity to 71. Better? 72. Much better? Well go back to 50. Barely there?
My point is that very little happens until Opacity hits 70. Below that there is very little smudge apparent. Above 72 Smudge become very apparent.
But here's the tricky bit. It's not consistent. Sometimes nothing happens at a setting of 68 and it's harsh at 72. While other times Opacity works as it should. Ie a nice linear affect from opacity of 1 to 100. The results of the Smudge tool are far more obvious if used on a hard straight line. ie it's not obvious on clouds but is on a building roof line. Changing Hardness is also a factor.
Is it related to smudging just pixels or is it more related to colour or contrast?
So any clues on why the Smudge brush is so erratic?
regards
Smudge test

Re: Smudge test
The Smudge Brush works well for me, I use it a lot.
I have an issue with the Scratch Remover Tool, sometimes it works other times it doesn't.
I can't explain why brushes sometimes work and sometimes don't.
Every time there is an 'improvement' something goes wonky.

Re: Smudge test
I also have similar results with the Smudge tool. The Scratch Remover is more manageable because it grabs pixels in the boundary area to help fill in a scratch or other type blemish. The angle of attack has a lot to do with the success of the Scratch Remover tool, as well as it's width setting.
