External Editor - how to put result back into catalogue

Post by nickholus »

I'm using 3.1 on Linux

I've started to use the External Editor feature to launch another tool, which edits the TIFF and saves back over it. I'd assumed then ASP would import the result and stack it with the original, so when browsing the catalogue I can see the edited version of my images.

It doesn't do that. What's the expected method we get the result back into the catalogue for when browsing our image collection?

Thanks,

Nick

I don't think the authors' intention was that you should be able to process the image in ASP after you had used an external editor on it. To quote from AFX's Survival Guide:
12.4. Image Editors
When you use an image editor to post-process images from AfterShot,
we strongly recommend that you use 16-bit TIFF files in a wide working
space so that there is no information loss when going from AfterShot
to the external program.
There is a Preferences screen to set up an external editor; you can
specify which program is run on a file when the <CTRL+E> key is pressed.

Using that shortcut will generate a TIFF (or JPEG) file in the directory
of the source file and then call the editor you specified on the Preferences
to edit that file.
No mention of any ability to post-post-process the image. This annoyed me, too, until I read the Survival Guide.

when I use the external editor (in my case 16 bit tif and gimp 2.9.3 on llinux) and edit the image there it is re-imported into the catalog.
You must save (not save as) - here in gimp "overwrite xxxxx_edit.tif" (ASP 3.1. on ubuntu 12.04 with gimp 2.9.3)
