Hi,
Firstly I'd like to say that, as a new Ulead VS user, this forum has been a tremendous help in getting me started.
My question is this: I'm about to start converting some old Hi8 video camera tapes to DVD. My Sony Hi8 camera is connected, via an S-video lead, to a Canopus ADVC-100 analogue - DV converter which, in turn, is connected to my PC via firewire. In the Advanced Capture Property Settings dialog box which output field order should I select? Should I select Upper Field First because my prime source is analogue tape, or should I select Lower Field First because VS is receiving a Digital DV input albeit via the Canopus converter?

Hi8 to DV to MPEG - which field first?

Are you planning to capture to an mpeg video (insterad of dv .avi)
If you are going to do alot of editing, I would recommend capturing dv .avi's instead, and then converting to mpeg as a final step. (Note: DV .avi will require about 13gb per hour, and if you have Fat32 drives, you will have to break it up into 4gb chunks).
If you are capturing other than DV .avi, then go with Lower Field First.

HI Peter,
I would suggest Lower Field First, because the video that VS would be capturing is digital, not analogue. Your Canopus converter has converted it to digital then sent it to VS through your firewire. VS would not know that the video started out as analogue.
Edit
Just stopped typing to get a coffee, and George beat me to response..

George / Vidoman,
Many thanks for your prompt replies.
I want to capture to MPEG because I've got about 50h of Hi8 tapes to convert and I want to keep the raw captured material for archive after editing & burning. The size of dv.avi precludes this even though I appreciate George's point that editing dv.avi is preferable.
On your collective advice I will select Lower Field First because VS9 is capturing dv even though the source tape is analogue.
Thanks again,
Pete
