For anyone following this, Corel support have offered to 'remotely connect to my computer' to resolve the issue. Frankly, I'm not keen as I can't for the life of me imagine how it could help as I've completely wiped the installation several times on their instruction and done so using the clean up tool. I've sent a sample of the pspimage files to support and they can't open them. Interestingly, I remembered that my storage solution of choice has multiple time stamped backups. I've stepped back through these and I can't open any of the images in X9 Update 3. I'm therefore absolutely convinced that this is a version/update compatibility issue. Quite why someone at Corel can't open images created using a version of their own tool is beyond me; it's not like we're talking about a corrupt file system here as I have multiple images in other formats in the same directory that are just fine. The only 'broken' images are pspimage files.
The bottom line: be very careful updating PSP - you might lose the ability to access your past work. At the least I'd recommend saving everything off to a common format first.

Re: x9 Upgrade 3 won't open pspimage files
Final update. I didn't get my images back and have been re-creating them. Corel support suggested that my image files "might be corrupted because of the malware" Err, what malware? Malware that presumably and quite coincidentally struck when I installed X9 Update 3 and that only affected pspimage files in a directory with lots of other images that were unaffected. I leave it to the reader to decide how likely that is. They offered my a 15% discount on more Corel products as a goodwill gesture. I am yet to take advantage of this kind offer to pay for more Corel products.
