What determines ability to buy upgrade....
I am thinking by the time I buy version 10 (IF I buy it) I will have a new PC. Purchasing x9 was painless, because x8 was there already on my PC. So, my question is this. Does Corel check to see if a previous registered version is present, or does it check to see if my e-mail address has a previous legitimate registration on my account? How does Corel determine one's ability to buy the upgrade vs. requiring full version? Thanks!

I doubt they care as long as you are sending them money. Without an earlier qualifying version the software will not be a legally valid copy however, even if you got it from Corel, if some sort of dispute were to arise later.

From the Corel website:
Upgrade Eligibility
To purchase this product, you must own a previous licensed version of Corel® VideoStudio (Pro or Ultimate). Please note that upgrade eligibility excludes Academic, Home and Student, OEM and Not for Resale (NFR) versions.
As far as I can tell, Corel does not check to see if a previous version is installed when installing a new version. You will have to have registered a previous version to be eligible for an upgrade.

Re: What determines ability to buy upgrade....
Hi Steven
This is how i understand it.
When installing the Upgrade if the previous version is still installed then installation will complete ok. RE- your X8 to X9
If installing Upgrade on a new pc (no other program installed) then you will be asked for the serial number of the new program and then the serial number of the older eligible program, you can provide either X8 or X9 serial numbers.
You could of course install X9 to the new pc, you will be asked for proof of eligibility by providing X8 serial number.
Once installed you will be prompted to register the program, I assume you have an account, so providing your accounts e-mail is sufficient. This is required after installing or re-installing the program.
Hope that helps

Re: What determines ability to buy upgrade....
Thanks everyone. The reason I asked the question is because I am not sure I saved the original e-mail with the serial number from x9.5. So maybe the full number is listed on my acct at corel. I will check.

Hi
Yes if you registered the program the details should be on your Corel account.
also if you installed using the Web Installer, running that file again should / may show your serial number, take a note then close the installer.
