MF4 Update 2 Error

Post by Kire »

Hi everyone..
Here's a good question for all.

Recently upgraded my machine to a AMD 64 3000+. DVD MF4 was working fine. For some reason MF4 started giving a "G Key Error" when starting the program. MF4 would then not completely encode a DVD straight to DVD or .iso file. It would get thru the first part, finish 100% and then notify that the process was completed. Unfortunately no DVD nor ISO was created. Wierd, Eh? Hard Drive space isn't a problem. Have over 400GB of empty space in case you are wondering.

I then applied the MF4 Update 2 thinking it would rectify the issue. What then happened is very peculiar. When you enter DVD MF 4 it does not give you an option to create a DVD or the third option. The only option/type of disc you can create is a VCD. Oh.. by the way the "G Key Error" upon entering the program is still present!

Any ideas?

System Specs Are:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 47 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~1809 Mhz (AMD 64 3000+)
BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. F4, 7/16/2005
MotherBoard: Gigabyte GA-K8nSLI Ultra
Memory: 2 * 1Gig DDR SDRAM (PC3200)
Video: ATI X600 All In Wonder

Was your previous processor 32 bit or 64 bit?
Curious, maybe you have to re-install the op system.

I would contact tech support. Unless you can search through the posts
and find what some users have posted via tech support solutions.
Maybe search for the words registry.

There's quite a few things to do and editing of the registry which fixed their problem. As always though it may or may not fix yours

maddrummer3301: Thanks for the reply.

My previous processor was a 32 bit, however that shouldn't matter since I did a complete format and reinstall of windows. After that was done I then installed MF4 which at first worked, and now, well... isn't.. Nothing was installed to make MF4 fail.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled MF4 about 5 times even going to the extremes of going into safe mode, and wiping Common Files\Ulead and deleting all references to Ulead within the registry.

Application still does not work. Here's a breakdown of my Test Case:

On Fresh MF4 Install:

If MF4 Update 2 is NOT installed:
- Receive a "G Key Error" when entering application
- Options to create VCD/DVD/etc ARE Enabled
- Am able to go thru a DVD creation process however .iso file or dvd is not created even though MF4 states it is finished

If MF4 Update 2 is Installed:
- Receive a "G Key Error" when entering application
- Only option to do in application is to Create VCD (No other option is visible)

Here's a wierd thing... the application does not install itself in Program Files, it installs itself in Windows\Ulead. Wierd eh? I can't even choose where to install.

Oh.. has anyone with 64 bit processors noticed if "Data Execution Protection" within Windows screwing up their MF4? It sure caused problems on my end. Application started going haywire until i disabled "DEP"

I've never seen a "G Key error", and I'm lucky enough to see a few.
Question: Is there any number associated with the error, like 501 or something?

I searched Install Shield website for "G Key error" and found this:

http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108433

I don't know if this could be your problem. M$ doesn't have any reference to a "G Key Error".

Edit:
I think this error may be specific to Ulead. I tried googling it numerous ways, and went through several pages of M$ website concerning error messages and can find nothing about this type of error message.

Nice write up:
Yes, I would think you would want to re-install windows going 32bit to 64bit.
Sounds like a windows installer problem. I think your environment variables aren't correct or the installation program is reading them incorrectly.

I would definitely uninstall the program if it's residing under the windows directory. Many files under the windows directory are monitored and if changed will be replaced from a backup copy. An added feature of protection under xp. Plus to run everything from the windows directory I think you would have to have administrative priveleges. (You probably do).

I wouldn't even attempt to fix those problems, to time consuming.
Definitely contact tech support. They helped me out.

This is only part of the directories that are installed, there are more and many settings in the registry.

Here is an example of one of my installs on c:\
The Main Program executables:
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 4.0 Disc Creator

The AllUsers Directory (Hidden)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\4.0

The Users Directory (Your username)
C:\Documents and Settings\admin1\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\4.0

I think the key error is coming from the registry. Not reading the license key for the program correctly.

Hope this helps,

some suggests to disable any antivirus/spyware before installing Moviefactory. you might also want to give that a try....

Hey everyone.. Just got MF4 to work fine with the second update..

Wanted to follow up with how I got everything to work okay in case someone has the same problem. I really didn't want to install Windows XP 64 because of some legacy devices I use and drivers are not available and this was a fresh install of Xp Pro so I thought I would try some oldie but goodie tricks.

As some background whenever I tried to uninstall/install MF4 again I could not do it completely. I only was given the choices to Modify/Repair/Uninstall. Unfortunately Uninstall would only uninstall Quicktime. Doh.. That didn't help..

Anyway.. here's what I did to get it up an running:

1) Boot into Safe Mode (that's F8 after your BIOS shows)
2) Delete the \Program Files\Ulead Directory
3) Delete \Program Files\Common Files\Ulead
- NOTE: You need to delete this in safe mode. Trying to delete it in your profile not while in safe mode will basically result in some sort of access denied/permission denied message.
4) Search for any other ULEAD files and delete them ( I deleted all my temp directories for my projects across my drives just to be safe)
5) Type REGEDIT in RUN
****** BEWARE.. Messing with Registry can be Dangerous.. Please Know what you are doing***
Scan and Delete all references to ULEAD, Movie Factory, and MF4. This can take a while.

Note: Here is why I could not do a Fresh Install or Uninstall..In the setup.ini file on the MF4 disc there is the following line:
ProductGUID=448AB2CB-C94A-47DE-80B8-9D7824DEFA57

Search for this in the Registry and Delete it. This key in the registry basically told the install program that DMF4 was already installed. I didn't even see this for the longest time.

6. Reboot
7. Install from the cdrom..
8. Reboot
9 Install the Second Update
10. Reboot
11. Enjoy.. Cheers!

Thanks for everyone for the ideas on how to fix. I appreciate it!
