Are you speaking about "animated GIF" ?
If yes, Painshop Pro doesn't create animated GIF.
You may try AnimationShop, an old software created by Jasc.

There are a number of ways you can create different frames (for a movie ) showing the appearance of letters as if being animated on screen.

Here is one way. You can change the size of the font, and the frames to suit what you are after.
I used Arial Font , a green background 1000 x 1000 pixels to start with and font size 72 .

1. Make a background frame with a suitable color - I used 1000 x 1000 and green.
2. Choose the Text tool and click in your frame where you want the word to start and Type in your word. Click the Apply Tick
This is shown in the image and shows how the layers are set up and that the Vector layer can be expanded to show the whole word on a single layer.
01word.jpg
3. Once you have applied your text then do Objects > Convert Text to Curves > As Character Shapes
02convertttocharactershapes.jpg
4. This now places each letter on its own layer as shown in the following diagram:
03lettershapes.jpg
5. You can now toggle the visibility layers for each letter and so create the different frames showing any combination of letters .
04visibility toggles.jpg
Each frame can be saved as a jpg and then used in say Windows Movie maker to make animated text in a video.

Save them as Gifs and you can combine them in Animation Shop to produce an animated Gif.

Yes you can do it using masks as well but that would mean also trying to explain masks to you as well.

You still have not stated if you want an animated Gif or a movie, but since you have mentioned Corel Video Studio I presume you want an instructional movie like on you tube.
I mentioned Windows Movie maker because it is a free program and you can still get it and it will still run on Windows 10 and it is fairly simple to use.

BTW you are not making the animation in paintshop pro , but the individual frames that can be added to a video timeline and made to appear animated.
You do not need Animation shop if you are trying to do just a video. Animation shop produces animated gifs that repeat over and over again.

1. Load your background image.
2. Choose text tool and type in your text. Click Apply.
You will now have 2 layers , the bottom background image and the top Text layer.
01LettersTyped.jpg
3. Down the bottom of your Layers palette is a mask button, click it and choose a hide all mask.
This will make all the letters disappear. To show each letter we will need to paint on our black mask in white (like using a torch in a dark room to show objects - hide with black / show with white )
02ApplyMask.jpg
04. Now you lower the opacity (I used 38) to make the location of the letters visible. Then paint the first letter using the paintbrush with white so it is clear. Change the opacity back to 100 % and only the first letter should be visible.
03Opacity PaintWhite.jpg
5. Save this as a jpg - you will get a warning that it will need to merge the image , that's OK as it does not change the original.
04SavesasMergedJpg.jpg
You then repeat this procedure in turn for each lette rprogressively showing more letters.

This is the result of doing it 4 times. Have had to post it in a separate post as each posting only allows 4 attachment images per post.
have combined the 4 images on a single canvas to show what is produced. You would then take each frame and add it to your video line or overlay line and change the length of time it is displayed before the next frame takes its place
