X9 We encountered a problem installing error - Solved

When installing PSP X9, it kept failing at the 37% mark with the error message "We encounted a problem installing". After numerous attempts and contacting Corel support (typical instructions were update drivers, disable security, update windows, etc.), I read through the log files in 'Temp/PSP9_Log' directory. Around line #780 was the message:

"Error 1303.The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: c:\ProgramData\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X9. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator."

At the end of the log file was the message:

"Result: 1603 -- Fatal error during installation."

Solution---
1. Manually create the "\ProgramData\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X9" directory.
2. Change the permissions of the directory to "Take Ownership" of the directory and allow full access.
3. Run the X9 installation as administrator (Right click, select "Run as administrator").
4. In my installation, the Target directory created in the Windows Startup Directory was not correct.
  • installed as - "C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X9 (64-bit)\Corel PaintShop Pro.exe"
  • should be - "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X9 (64-bit)\Corel PaintShop Pro.exe"
