Moving timeline forward

Post by RyderBros »

Hi, so i made a video and decided i wanted to add more clips to the start. The issue I'm having is when i add a clip to the start of the video it throws all my audio out of sync. Would there be a way i can push the entire timeline forward, that way i could add clips without throwing my audio out of sync.

Thanks!

Hi RyderBros

And welcome to the forums

Yes there is the process called Ripple Editing that will link the timelines together so when you insert a clip at the beginning all clips will shift right.

To the left of the timelines are several padlocks, the top enables Ripple Editing, others select individual timelines.

why then would my ripple editing not work.
I am making a mixed video and jpeg film. i started with a instant movie type template. put my pictures in the place holders along with a few videos here and there. now I would like to insert at the begining the opening titles. but no matter how I try VS will not move the time line right so I can insert more at the begining.
I have also noticed that if I put a transision detween two clips (video or Jpeg) it will pull the conecting clip forward so as to over lap the clips for the transision but not the rest of the time line. shorly it should at lest do that ?

Instant templates are for use "as supplied" they are made for use without any further editing - any attempt to modify them will upset the timing of the whole project - they are for people who do not want to change them or do any editing - best you can do is add more instant templates before and after and extend your project that way

if you want to elaborate on what is supplied them you need to use the full editing functions starting from scratch adding your own clips and effects - then you can do whatever you want - add titles apply ripple editing etc.

what’s the point of a template if you can't edit it? Other editing packages I have used allow you to use a template them edit it as much or as little as you like. Isn’t that what a template is for in a editing programme. After all if you were just going to stick a few videos and pictures in a template why bother buying an editing package when you can do that on facebook. In movieplus x6 you can start with a quickmovie template add your videos or pic's then open it in the editing software and change it all you like with 100% programme functionality.
Don't get me wrong VSx9 is a great package put it does seem to be missing some of the basic's to halp speed up editing.

sorry rant now over!

Fungus, there isn't any problem editing them templates, you just need to observe their structures.
sometimes a long sound track or background will block your action.
If you want to insert anything in front than "lock" the ripple edit of main and relevant tracks.

I see what you mean asik1 but I must be doing something wrong somewhere along the line.
I thought that may be the case. Locking all the tracks didn't have any affect on the timeline though. I found on the temple I was using there was a black background on the main video track which seems to be the case on a lot of the templates. However on the one I am using if I lock the ripple edit on the main track as you do, it also locks all the other tracks. I noticed when I tried another template (just as a test) it only locks the main track and you need to click lock the other tracks you wish it to affect. At some point I may have grouped the track without realising and that has brought other complications.
I think I’ll start again from scratch. "if at first you don't succeed...... give the PC a kickin"

It is great to be able to get some advice on the forum though, so thank you to all that reply. Your help is much appreciated

Hi Fungus
Can you tell us which Instant Project you are using? We may be able to understand what you are seeing?

Also what are your project properties, are you setting 16:9 or 4:3 as that will affect what you see on the preview screen.

Parts of the preview screen are unused, that is not part of the video, if you change the background Colour (F6) anything but black will show the actual video frame.
Revert to black before rendering the project.
