Thumbnails for PSP files?

Post by terrypin »

After the transition from XP to Win 10 on a new PC, thumbnails of PSP 8 images are no longer displayed in my Windows File Explorer folders. I recalled there was a utility to achieve this and I've found one in my old files called PSP Thumbnail Handler. But after installation I still see no PSP thumbnails. Anyone able to help please?

BTW, does this happen in later versions of PSP? And why don't they get thumbnails anyway, like just about every other image type?

Image

EDIT: Installed 30-day trial version of Mystic Thumbs and have my thumbnails back.
https://mysticcoder.net

But $29.95 seems a steep price (even more so with present value of the UK £) so still looking for a free alternative.

This is a problem for Paintshop Pro. It corrupts really very easily.

I'm using X9 and part of the reason I did the upgrade was because my thumbnails corrupted and just started showing the icons.

The only way i know of to fix it is to reinstall whatever version you're using. there is no need for a third party solution. I don't know that PSP8 can generate thumbnails in windows 10 but i have no reason to think it can't, not much has changed

so uninstall mystic thumbs, uninstall psp8, reinstall PSP8 and you should be fine.

they really need to release a fix tool for this. even if you install a demo for a later version, when you remove it your thumbnails are gone.

I use Mystic Coder, but I bought it years ago, before Brexit, so the £ rate was in my favour.
Ergo, you can thank the Brexit supporters for the higher price.

Thanks both. I found a free tool called Sage Thumbs today which seems to partially solve the problem. Some thumbs show the image as it would appear in PSP 8, others show only the background, no layers. But that's a lot better than generic icons.

I may try the reinstall, although it's a hassle because it requires three steps: the original CD setup, followed by two subsequent patches. And it's only a week since I had to do that following the latest 'anniversary' update of Windows 10', as PSP failed to load.

Even though it's from 2005, PSP Thumbnail Handler from Bot Productions works on my system--Win 10 Pro 32-bit, with PSP X8.

It's generally best to avoid bringing politics in to non political forums. But the £/$ rate moved by 15% following brexit. are you telling me that whilst $29.95 'seems a bit steep' if it were the equivalent of $26.85 that would have been fine? No.

Terry, you might want to change the info about your OS in the Profile information, which still says XP. :-)

Try deleting your thumbnails databases and recreating them. You should be able to delete them by running Disk Cleanup on the system drive and checking that you want to delete thumbnails. Note that running "delete thumbnails" is not the same as turning off thumbnails, so when you reaccess the folder thumbnails will automatically be recreated.

If that doesn't work to delete them, try this http://www.howtogeek.com/232779/how-to- ... indows-10/
Note that the icon caches and thumbnail caches are separate, so you probably don't need to delete the iconcache files.

Hi everyone.

I've been on this board for many years (from memory!) - but seldom post.

However, have been affected by this particular issue myself I thought I'd pop on to see if there was a firm solution (ideally stopping short of a re-installation..).

Unless I've missed something though that doesn't seem to be the case? :(

I am on Windows 10.x Pro - and have PaintShop Pro X9 (64 bit - and 32 bit for scanning {another on-going issue.. but that's another story}).

So.. HAVE I missed a fix for this issue? - as on my system I don't see *any* thumbnails for ".pspimage" files on Windows 10.x - which is a real pain, as it means I need to re-open each one to simply check what it is sometimes! (I name files properly.. but with so many I often have slight variations on the same image). I used to be able to see thumbnails but no longer the case.. and man do I miss them!

Does anyone have a fix that doesn't involve re-installing PSP? If not, what side-effects / considerations are there if I DO end up re-installing the software (nb. I've only had PSP X9 for a matter of weeks I think.. I upgrade each year).

Thanks in advance,
John Mounsey.

Unfortunately I can't help. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones in that I can see the thumbnails in Explorer for all types of files including .pspimage. I've looked through the various Windows settings and cannot find anything that would control this - I do think it is a Windows issue rather than PSP. And I am using Windows 10 (which has been acting up recently - I think the upgrades are causing more problems rather than fixing them).

My only suggestion as a work-around is to use PSP Manage mode to view thumbnails. It displays the thumbs well and it is easy to move from folder to folder with navigator. This is my preferred way of working and I prefer to use list rather than thumbnails in explorer.

I am having no trouble in seeing all psp thumbnails in Windows explorer on XP and Windows 10

I opened each of the versions of PSP that I have and made a coloured background document and then used the paintbrush to paint two different colors on that background and saved it as a psp file in the same desktop folder.
This was done with PSP8, X2 - X9.
So guess I am another lucky one.
