VS9 arrived/installed yesterday (Help-About says version 19.5.0.35) so I'm ready for my first project... very simple, with a few notes/titles in between some video and jpg files
My video is all 1280x720 and my end result is going to be a standard 720x480 DVD (set to widescreen pixel aspect ratio)
So do I use a 1280x720 preset, and then let the "Share to DVD" (or share to a computer file to give to MyDVD) process make the resolution change?
Or should I use the DVD preset so as I drop files on the timeline they are (automatically?) conformed to be ready to write to a DVD?
First project, which preset?

Re: First project, which preset?
you should set your project properties to match the original videos - the best way to do that is BEFORE you put anything in the timeline to go to "Settings >> preferences" and put a tick in the box against "show a message when inserting first video clip in timeline"
now when you put the first video in the timeline you will receive a message asking if you wish to change the project settings to match the video - say yes to that and it happens automatically
do all your editing at the original video resolution - when all video editing is finished go to "Share" and select the make a file for a computer option and render an mpeg2 file with the 720 x 480 widescreen setting
when finished test that file - play it - preferably outside of Videostudio in any other player you may have - but if not then use VS
now within Videostudio (very very few of us use MyDVD) go to "Share >> Disc >> DVD" - if when the disc module opens there is any thing in it's timeline delete it - then using the icons at top left import the new file you have just made and tested - check the settings in there by clicking on the gear wheel icon in the bottom left corner - then continue to burn your DVD

Thank you very much... I've made a notes file with your reply as the 1st entry, to go along with the PDF I downloaded

Re: First project, which preset?
After making my 1st DVD, I had to go back and mark each picture/video to "Fit to Screen" AND go into preferences and check the box to always use "Fit to Screen" so future projects will show full screen on my TV

Re: First project, which preset?
Hi John
I noticed your post to the Wishlist forum.
1 / The black border you are seeing may be a discrepancy between your video file using 1280 x 720 and the standard used for DVD at 720 x 576. (720 x 480)
2 / You should not normally have to use Fit to Screen as that option may in some cases cause a distortion.
3 / It may be possible that the black border is part of the video file, if so then you may have to live with the results. I suspect you may have a 4:3 video inside a 16:9 black frame?
Can you provide details of your project and your video file.
4 / Go to Settings – Project Properties (Alt = Enter) Copy and Paste the details in the properties panel to this post.
5 / Right click your clip on the timeline and select properties, what are they, you can create an image of that window to attach to your post.
6 / if possible can you upload a sample to a sharing site, Google Drive , DropBox or Microsoft One Drive, all are free to use.

Re: First project, which preset?
This was not a problem with the car, it was driver error... too impatient to read the PDF and too used to my previous program that didn't like Win10 and had to be replaced
I dropped my video in the "center" track, which is the overlay track, not the main editing track like my former program (grin... looking almost the same does not MEAN the same)
I have now moved the files to the top track where they belong, and will do that for future projects... I was in a rush on this one because my wife wanted to see what I had filmed while we were on vacation, so I just jumped in after a cursory look at the quick start part of the PDF (going back to the quick start, it does show the video on the top track... my bad)
I did get a full screen DVD that we watched last night, so now I will do some more reading and tutorial watching before I do any more editing... I'm going to start with the 30 day trial of Studio Backlot, and if there is more to learn there, I'll check their price for an actual membership

Re: First project, which preset?
Hi John
Thanks for the feedback and good to know you have found the problem, easily done.
As an aside, your video is 1280 x 720 that being 16:9 ratio, should not be a problem in burning those discs, but can you check the video frame order, whether it be Progressive or Interlaced
For some reason I suspect Progressive.
One reason why I asked for those Video properties?
Video studio Share and Burner options default to Interlaced Upper Field.
Changing the Field Order of the original video may impact on quality, causing some jagged lines.
If your disc shows any quality issues then you should investigate the video properties used for the render.

Re: First project, which preset?
First, no other place I could find, so added my Canon SX510 HS to the Corel line in my profile
Properties... MOV H.264 24bit color 1280x720 29.97 fps LPCM 48khz audio
No mention of progressive or interlaced
Since the DVD I (hurriedly) created now plays full screen OK, with no jagged lines that we saw, I'm going to presume the transcoding worked to go from HiDef to DVD
Now that my rushed project is done, I've Googled and am going to spend time watching tutorials before I do any more work... WITH putting the video on the correct track

Re: First project, which preset?
Hi
Its good to hear that your video played without problems.
As for the frame order.
Usually if progressive is used there is no indication when viewing video properties via video studio.
Although the Project Properties may/should show Frame Based.
If interlaced for HD will show Upper Field First
But not a problem if you are happy with your results.
