Transitions: isolated to one object, not entire timeline?

Post by brandon77 »

Hi,

I am trying to add the SMEAR Transition to an image I'm bringing in. However when I apply it to any single video track, the smear transition affects the whole timeline not just the single object/image I'm adding.
And yet other times I've been able to "isolate" the transition to just the object I want to use it on.

Is there actually a way to better control this? The alternative, besides luck, is having to create and render several 'layers' of timelines, and only applying the transition effect to the object after everything else is 'brought forward' and not impacted by it. (sorry for my wording, I'm not yet up to speed on the jargon).

Any ideas?

Thank you,
Brandon

like asik I am not with you - you cannot put a transition in a timeline - transitions only go on either end of an image or across the join between two clips AFTER they are in the timeline - whatever I try I cannot do anything different

I think I see what Brandon is saying.
Place an image in the video track that about 10 seconds long
Now directly below it on an overlay Track place two images with a transition between them both.
Make sure both images on the overlay are smaller than the video track image so that you can see the Video track image at all times.
When played back the transition is applied to both the overlay AND the main video track.
What I believe he would like to see is the transition ONLY apply to the two images on the overlay track. See the screenshot below.

If that's the case, then as we know, there are quite a few "overlay transitions" which work the way you describe, AussieTX, and would thus meet Brandon77's requirements. Unfortunately, though, Smear is not one of them. Look in the Transitions dropdown menu in VS for the Overlay Transitions category to see what is available.

Thank you for the responses everyone. I'm sorry if I wasn't precise enough. AussieTX, yes that's exactly what I was trying to articulate (smear transition remaining local to the two objects it's affecting/not impacting whole timeline..)
Unfortunately it looks as if this has been a long-standing, never resolved issue. Oh well.

You could create a separate project for the overlay.
Put the two images on the main video track and put the Smear transition between them. Make any adjustment and then save as a vsp project file.
Start a new project and put the background image on the main track. Then add the Smear project file on the overlay track and position it where you want

Now when you preview the project the Smear transition only applies to the overlay images and not to the main track.

This is a workaround but does work and is actually your alternative you mentioned in your initial post.
