Hi all,
I use an external drive for my raw video files, which are bigger than I can store on my laptop. I'd like to make a rough cut, store it on my laptop, and edit that copy into the final video. Can someone please help me understand how to do that? I suppose I could export the rough cut in a lossless format (though I'd have to ask for some help on the settings), put it on my laptop drive, and then re-import it as a new project, but that seems very clunky and it feels like there is probably a smarter method.
Thanks to anyone who can help...
...Jay

Ummmm -- are you hoping to be able to start editing with the external drive connected - then disconnect the hard drive and take your laptop somewhere else to finish editing - or what ??
As long as your hard drive is connected you can just edit to completion
If the former then smart package seems to be the best option - do your rough editing ensuring you have bits of every video you intend to use in it - save it - then go to "File >> Smart package" and follow the prompts
this will copy the original (raw if you wish) videos and anything else used in the project into a complete folder on the laptop for you to continue working
when I say original I mean the full video file on your hard drive so if it quite big then the smart package will be quite big
When editing in Videostudio the programme needs to access the full video files all the time you are editing - what you see in the programme are just thumbnails containing links to the original file - there are never any files actually in Videostudio if that's what you were hoping for

Hi Brian,
Yes, that was what I was hoping... I guess I just need a bigger working drive.
Thanks for your help!
