VideoStudio x9 not recording game

Post by Jennifur_Vultee »

I recently updated from VideoStudio x5 to VideoStudio Ultimate x9 and when I try to record game footage it will record games that are windowed like Elder Scrolls Online but if I try to record Skyrim full screen the Corel Screencap x9 does not start recording when I press F11. If I start Screencap before I launch Skyrim it will record my desktop but when the game launches the screen is black but it records the audio. If I run Skyrim in windowed mode it will record the game but the window can't be centered from inside the game. Is there any way to get Sceencap to actually start with Skyrim running full screen and have it actually capture the gameplay and not just the audio?

Why not set Videostudio screen cap to record just the inside of the windowed game - you can set the capture area to whatever size you want - in whatever location you want

I have the same problem as Jennifur. I am also using CVSx9.

If I start the screen recorder stand alone, or if I start it from within VideoStudio, the screen capture will record windowed game replays ... but that then includes the window header and task bar within the video.

Again, starting the screen recorder from either location with the intent to record the replay full screen, then it does not work - as follows ...

Method 1. (the method I have sometimes used - compare to method 3 below) - Start the screen recorder and set the file name and file path for saving, set the other options - 30fps, wmv, etc. and "full screen". Then start the replay and wait for game client to load, pause the replay as soon as it starts, alt+tab to screen recorder and click record ... get the 3 second countdown ... when it reaches zero the recorder crashes and saves a wmv of the desktop+file explorer "screenshot" to the destination filename and folder - it used to correctly record the replay and save it there.

Method 2. (the emergency alternative) - start the screen recorder and set the settings as above, start recording "full screen", after count down double click the replay file in file explorer ... screen recorder shows the file explorer and game client loading at start of recording but that can be trimmed out ... except that now it just crashes the screen recorder and saves the same desktop + file explorer screenshot as the wmv file in the destination set before recording.

Method 3. (the preferred method) - set the recorder as 1 above but leave it on "full screen", then minimise it. In file explorer start the replay and let it load into game client ... while it is loading, alt+tab to screen recorder so it is on top of the full screen replay loader and poised to start recording as soon as replay is loaded. When replay loads, press record, get the 3 second countdown and it starts recording "in the background" allowing me to use the replay camera controls to get the viewpoint I want ... except that now at countdown point zero it minimises the replay screen, dumps a desktop+file explorer screenshot as the wmv file into the save destination and crashes the recorder. Also, to get the mouse to activate the record button the ctrl+mouse method has to be used - previously the screen recorder was the "focus" program and only mouse was needed.

In all three methods above, the F10/F11 keys no longer work even when the box is checked for them to be available.

|Recording in windowed mode is not viable - not only does the recording include the window header and taskbar (maximised window), cropping them out with a custom area changes the proportions captured and they do not then fit into the 1920x1080 video size without letterboxing. The same problem applies if trying to crop them out in VideoStudio using a custom filter. The video cannot be stretched to remove the letterboxing because that will partially mask out info panels at the sides of the game view.

Concurrent with this, recording with the screenrecorder in windowed view has introduced a motion stutter in the captured video when watched with Win 10 Movies & TV Player, and within the VideoStudio editor, which persists after rendering to a new movie. I also experienced this stutter in full screen recording too while that was still working, but it only began occurring sometime during August 2016.

If needed I can give links to Youtube videos in my channel that show the smooth stutterless recordings from full screen pre-August, and the stuttering fullscreen and windowed ones post-August. I can also link to the abominable cropped view ones caused by recording windowed mode replays and cropping to remove the window header and task bar.

Please can someone help with -
A. Getting the screen recorder to record fullscreen without crashing out immediately after countdown.
B. Getting the F10/F11 keys to work without causing the game client to minimise.
C. Losing the video stutter in recordings (the audio does not stutter, just the video).

Jennifur - can you confirm plaese that what I have described is what you are experiencing? If it's different then I'll move my post to a different thread.

Thanks in advance.
