How Do You Extend Video Fadeout When Music Ends

Post by rhm8 »

Hi,

I looked all over and can't find the answer to this.

I have a 3 minute video. The video portion ends at about 2:58 but the music track ends at 3:02. I am trying to do a 4 second fade-out but the options panel won't let me go beyond 3 seconds. I tried adding a photo to extend the video and lots of other tricks I thought would work but nothing did. I've been using the fade-out transition to try to make this work. Do I have to extend the music track? Is that what's limiting me? I tried that but maybe there's another way?

Thanks.

One of us is a little confused

I do not see any choices in the options panel to fade out video (only audio) where are you seeing the video fade

adding a fade to a video will not extend it's time any rate - it will still be 2:58 - in fact it may appear shorter if it has faded completely before the end

I would just take a snapshot of the last frame and put that on the end of the video and set it for 4 seconds and fade that - - OR put a 4 second colour block (complimentary to the video) on the end of the video and fade that out

Thanks, actually those are exactly the two things I had tried. I was trying to fade a picture of the last frame. For whatever reason last night it wouldn't drag past the end of the music track, this morning it did. But I still can't get the fade effect to work. The photo's duration is for 4 seconds. If I drag the Fade to Black either before or after the photo it doesn't fade at the right spot and locks my ability to set the timer in the options panel. It would be nice if there was simply an effect in the FX panel, not the Transitions panel that I could drag *onto* the clip, not before or after the clip. How do I fade the photo at the end? How do I get it to fade gradually over the 4 second period? Thanks.

When you drag the 'fade to black ' transition down to the timeline it goes ON the photo - not before and not after but on it - then you select it and open the options panel when you should be able to set the time for the fade - on a 4 second clip it will obviously be a maximum of 4 seconds.

An alternative would be to use "Customise Motion" on the picture and set the keyframes so that the opacity is 100% at the beginning and is down to zero at the end

OR you could shorten the audio track. Hold the "Shift" key, click onto the end of the audio track and align it with the end of the video. This will NOT cut the track but it will speed up the music slightly. It will hardly be noticed losing 4 seconds in 180 seconds.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Finally!!!

Well, believe it or not, I still cannot do it with the fade out transition. It will only allow me to place the transition before or after the photo. It won't let me place it ON the photo. Thank heavens you told me about the customize motion option because that worked!! But I had to play with it a bit. Much appreciated, thanks for your help.

Thanks also to Terfyn, I was going to try your method if the above didn't work.

You could try setting your default transition duration to 4 seconds before you use it -- go to "Settings >> Preference" - when the dialogue window opens select the 'Edit' tab at the top - then down almost at the bottom set the "Default transition effect duration" to 4 - OK out - now try adding the transition to the photo

Yes, I might try that on the next fade out I attempt.
