Compliant, seperate, .MP2 Video / .AC3 Audio = Re-encode !!?

Post by iamjcl »

In using MF3.5, it has worked reasonably well, but in importing some discs made with a standalone Sony GX7, the need arose to rip the discs into seperate Video and Audio files (.MP2, .AC3). I can bring these files into MF3.5, but at burn I get the dreaded "this will take some time to render...". Also, the program says I need more disc space than it really needs (says I need about 5.2 gigs, when both files together are less than 4.4 gigs). I can work around the size thing Ok...

If I bring the above files into MF3.5 as a single MPG, with audio included (same ac3 stream), all is OK, plus it says it is smaller for some reason.

I have tried matching the "mpeg settings" to that of imported video/audio, but makes no diff.

I have to split the A/V into seperate files because as one .VOB renamed to .MPG, for some reason the timecode is off, and ulead (and Windows media player etc...) says the .MPG is 3.5 seconds long, despite its 4.3 gig size. It imports OK, though, and plays past 3.5 seconds - I just cant' select chapter stops etc... because of it. I can even burn a disc with the file, and all including a/v sync is perfect at outcome.

Is there perhaps a program that can "fix" this .VOB / Mpg so the timecode is OK, or a program that can "re mux" the seperate audio / video files back into one file with the proper time code ??

- Thanks

Are you recording in the VR mode?
If not then that is what you should be trying to use for importing
videos recorded on the Sony recorder.
Renaming VOB's to Mpg's doesn't always work because VOB's are
container files for Mpeg files.

I import 4.3 gig movies all the time from with no problems.

If your NOT recording in VR mode then using MF3 you have to
set the Sony recorder to NO chapters because MF3 will import all the
individual chapters as small Mpeg files. Never use that method.

The purpose of the VR mode is to use the playlist feature. It's a little
confusing with the Sony recorder but whatever you have defined as the
playlist will be imported as one Mpeg2 file PROVIDING the video was
recorded non-stop and you haven't SPLIT the video into 2 Mpeg files on
the recorder.
This is the process to import a 4gig file from the Sony recorder:
You can leave chaptering set to the default of 6 minutes per chapter.
The chaptering doesn't matter.
- Record a movie Non-Stop for 1 hour at HQ or 2 hours at Standard Quality. If you don't want to record commercials then PAUSE the recording, don't stop it. Pausing will keep the recorded file as 1 complete Mpeg2 file.
- You can TRIM the beginning or the end of the video. This will still keep one Mpeg2 file(video file) on the Dvd.
If you cut a commercial out from the middle of the video then the video(Mpeg2 file) will be split into 2 Mpeg2 files on the dvd.
- After recording create a Playlist on the recorder. Define the playlist from
the beginning to the end.
- Finalize the Dvd-rw in the recorder.
- Put the dvd into the computer and start MF3, import the dvd using the MF3 program. When the selections come up what to import select
"Playlist 1 " (or the playlist you defined) additional playlists will show up as
"Playlist 2" "Playlist 3" etc.
After the Mpeg2 file is imported to the harddrive you may have to delete
the video on the TIMELINE and RE-IMPORT the video back into the timeline.
If you don't do this MF3 sometimes doesn't see the file as a compliant dvd file. After you re-import the file the size should be exactly the same on the
timeline as the Mpeg2 file size.
Edit and Mark Chapters in the chaptering module.
Make sure "Do Not Convert Compliant Dvd Files" is CHECKED.
Make menus, goto the output screen and de-select Create DVD.
Create dvd folders on the harddrive. Then play the dvd using a software player to make sure the menus and video is correct.
Use MF3's burning program or NERO(the best) to create the dvd.
Using Nero make sure to select Dvd-Video as the project. Then drag the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder from the harddrive into the VIDEO_TS folder in the compilation window.

Note: If you edit the video at all in MF3 by trimming or cutting then MF3 will re-render the file (ouch!). The file will then be re-rendered to whatever the
project settings are. So in this case make the project settings exactly the
same as the source video settings. MF3 still has bugs so if one wants to
actually cut and edit then VS8 with the AC3 add-on pack is much better
for this.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know some of that.

But, I am recording on -R discs (have about 60 to edit) and VR mode is not an option.

Interestingly enough, recording on +rw discs produce .VOBs that can simply be renamed to .MPG without problems.

I have found several ways to import the -R discs without problems however.

1) use Tmpgenc Dvd Author to "impor from disc" - this makes one nice mpg, with or w/o chapters via check box, that I import into MF3.

2) rip the disc with DVD decrypter, seperating the audio and video streams, and import them seperately into another app.

Again, Thanks
