Capture problem - DVDWS thinks my drives are FAT32
I have used 2 different cameras on three different computers. It is not the hardware I am using. I have captured to a computer with a single hard drive and computers with multiple hard drives.
When I capture (transfer) a DV tape to the hard drive, file sizes are limited to around 4GB each.
When I repeat the capture process using Microsoft MovieMaker, I can capture 40 minutes of AVI in one big 9 GB file, not the three split files that ulead produces.
uleads tech support swears it is my machines, not their software.
Has anybody else had this problem? workarounds?
Windows XP all updates
Athlon Processors
1GB RAM
80GB C:
250GB capture drives
DVDWS 2.0 with all patches
All hard drives were reformatted when purchased to the NTFS format
Thanks.

Hi uleadgator
It's a type 2 issue IMO
Use type 1 & Scene detection off
I just captured 52 mins in XP, 1 one video of 11GB approx, 1 chapter
DVDWS 2 default is type 2 & Scene detection On.
Type 1 & Scene detection Off for one continous file.
Type 1 selection seems to stick, however Scene detection ticked On is alwas the default for a new project
Regards

type 1 capture - same problem
John,
I just finished using type 1 capture with scene detection off.
I still have the same problem.
Ulead is limiting my capture file size to FAT32 limits (4GB).
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Hey, Gator.
I had the exact same problem but with VS9. I upgraded from VS8 (which was able to capture 1hour long video files at about 19GB+/- no problem) and then I upgraded to VS9, which thought I was FAT32 and wouldn't capture anything bigger that 4GB. Didn't change anything else. If you look where you installed DVD WS I bet you're going to find multiple WS folders, one for each install attempt. Anyway, here's email I got from Ulead regarding Uninstalling/installing VS9. I did the steps and VS9 started saving files bigger that 4GB. Perhaps it will give you a clue to DVD WS? Good luck!
1) Clean up C:\Windows\temp directory. Clean up all files in C:\Documents and
Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Temp folder. Uninstall VideoStudio 9 from
control panel Add/Remove programs.
Delete following folders
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead
VideoStudio
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc
=>C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\
Proceed to step 2, even if you can't complete step 1.
2) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Please set "Show hidden
files and folders." in folder option in OS)
3) Please del the folder " Ulead VideoStudio 9.0" folder in C:\program
files\ulead system
4) Run Regedit from Start/Run in Windows task bar
5) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
(If you always see Ulead VideoStudio 9 file name showed in the Add/Remove
Program, please do point 5)
6) Then reinstall UVS 9 again
Hey, what do I know - it worked....

1. Are you sure you are saving to an NTFS drive?I tried it again (type 1) still doesn't work.
2. Are you PAL or NTSC?
3. By all means uninstall & reinstall DVD WS, remove:
Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead
DVD Workshop
Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD Workshop
4. Do you have any other Video Editors Installed?

UPDATE
The type 2, 4GB capture limit in Windows 2000 was caused by
MainConcept DV Codec 2.4.4 -- type 2
I uninstalled this in Add Remove programmes & I can now capture over 4GB with type 2 OpenDML & PCM audio.
The 4GB limit problem is caused by a rogue codec installed on your system, over ruling/messing up the MS DirectShow codec.

uleadgator - update
Sequence of events to date:
First of all, thanks to everybody for their suggestions.
Johnpr98 – It was not a type 2 issue on my machines, I do have a cyberlink video editor installed on my machine.
Chinito – I downloaded the trial version of VS9 and it captured one big file. I uninstalled VS9 and installed a copy of VS7se that came with a DVD burner, it also was able to capture one big file. No adjustments to either program were required.
Note: I am not able to burn a SVCD at the same time I render it. Ulead suggested I make some registry changes, I did the changes and DVDWS would not operate correctly. I will save this issue for another day. I am rendering in one step, closing the program, and burning in another step.
John – All my drives are NTFS, I format them after I install them, I am NTSC, I do not fully understand what OpenDML means. I did download and install a freeware program that lets me know what codecs are installed on my machine http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
John – I am running XP not W2k
Here is where I am at currently.
I contacted Ulead tech support and they emailed me a link to FTP another full version of DVDWS. I have uninstalled all Ulead products from my machine, cleaned the registry out, performed a disc cleanup and I am now defragging my drive.
After I install the FTP version of DVDWS I will give you an update.
Thanks again.

Using DVDWS2 I can record over 4GB with XP & Windows 2000 using type 1 or 2 DV OpenDMLThe 4GB limit problem is caused by a rogue codec installed on your system, over ruling/messing up the MS DirectShow codec
(OpenDML AVI is the Microsoft codec that is part of DirectX & does not have a 4GB filesize limit).
Your Cyberlink programme is an unknown too me, hopefully the new installation will fix this issue for you by over ruling the rogue codec?, if not please read the bold text again
See the picture in my Sun Aug 14, 2005 9:34 pm post for the correct file properties, I don't think your DVDWS captured video properties are the same, are they?

I can't figure out how to add an image to this message.
All my properties are the same as yours, except the PAL vs. NTSC.
Capture failed again to save one big AVI file in Type 2, I will try Type 1.
Still breaking it up according to FAT32 standards.
