Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi David
I had a crash one time only when I first tried the project.
Since then I am unable to crash the program.
When I download a VSP the first thing I do is save it as a copy, then I always have the original untouched.
When first run the Mercalli clips required a re-scan, now opening the original VSP shows Mercalli in tact, no rescan required, don’t understand that?
I was gonna re-name the Mod to mpg but as I can no longer crash, that seems pointless.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi Trevor,
My installation of X9 consistently crashes when I use the trim handles on clips in that vsp.
And some further experimentation
- captures a tutorial from Youtube using screen capture --> a .wmv file
- imported to X9 and trimmed by cutting (removing the ads) creates a new vsp: nothing else added, intent to make a smooth tutorial for use in class
- Share/create video file and X9 crashes after creating the file with size 0kb
- repeat this with X8, and the vsp is saved, and Share/create video file creates a new mpg file immediately
- import that x8 vsp to X9, and share/create video file - both by same as project settings and by setting the format to MPEG2 - crashes.
An extract of the explorer file view of the render results from the same vsp (created in x8) is: By being able to repeat a process successfully using X8 on the same platform that it fails on when using X9 pretty much focusses whatever it is to X9.
Very frustrating.
Pity Corel doesn't do remote dial-in to see and trap this sort of thing - they may learn quite a lot.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Could you provide a link to the youTube tutorial? Also perhaps attach the vsp file so that others can test it and work with the identical resources?

David, why you keep rendering to mpeg2? I use only WMV.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Canuck,
The youtube video was here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gOQcK36U3M and I used the screen capture tool, freehand selection to just catch the playing window. That produced a capture01.wmv file which I re-named to Video Studio Mask and Chroma Key tutorial.wmv.
Imported that to X8, and cut out the ads, saved as 'Corel Video Studio Mask and Chroma key tutorial x8.VSP'. Then rendered using the same as project preferences to get the .mpg file listed in the prior snippet.
simply rename this as the .vsp file, import the captured file and you'll have what I worked with.
Trevor,
I've been wondering whether a re-install may be needed, but a question about that re service packs. I have the original download and extracted ultimate (main, content and bonus files) and the service packs (sp1, 2, 2 incarnations of 3, and the 9,5 update). Does 9.5 replace all of the prior service packs?

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi David
As far as I know if you re-install video studio and Check for Updates, or at least let the program install updates automatically, then only the latest Service Pack will be installed.
Do not install SP’s manually.
If you download the Main program files again, then you will download a program file already patches, so no patch required when installing.
I would do a clean install using the cleanup tool, this removes the program but not personal settings, then delete the “19.0 folder for reset” and 19.0 from C:\Users\Trevor\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\19.0
Or at least rename them so a new install creates new folders.
Downloading video from the internet, the browser / software you use will affect the type of video you get.
Most re-code the video whilst downloading.
I used Torch as that has a download manager which seemed to do a better job than most.
Post updated
Out of interest I downloaded the file as a MP4 (41Mb) with these properties.
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 1116 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 125 Kbps
David, your download link -- I get an error message stating the zip cannot be opened, invalid file

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi
Thanks canuck, I misunderstood?
Why not simply zip the file.
Ok I can open that project file, but I only have a mp4 file not wmv, but it does link to the mp4.
David I was able to use Split by Scene to scan and locate the individual clips, sometimes useful if there are a lot of breaks.
One way to locate the adverts.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
I located the bits to be cut by simply pulling the play arrow from the start. Bits cut out (from memory)
- about 2 sec at start, person intro
- about 6 sec of blue screen (not VS workspace) company logo, about 30 sec from start
- last 20 seconds of if you like it etc . . . .
so that the result was all about the tutorial itself.
As to the zip file issue - renaming a vsp to zip to get around the site prohibitions on vsp's is something Trevor suggested to me not that long ago. Don't understand why it error when downloaded: don't try extracting because I didn't compress it, just re-name it, as I outlined. If this is a problem, then remove the forum prohibitions on uploading a vsp file?

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Programs like recent versions of WinZip Pro are set by default to automatically try to open a file with a .zip or similar extension. I suspect that might have been the case here.Don't understand why it error when downloaded: don't try extracting because I didn't compress it, just re-name it, as I outlined.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Trevor,
Your advice re re-installs. I run win 7 and the MS changes last Feb really screwed my VS (any version but esp X9) on that platform: could only get X9 to start again after the hotfix was published. Does the 9.5 update include the hotfix or is it necessary to run the hotfix manually?

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi David
As far as I know Service Pack 2 was provided for the disc version to correct the Windows Update issue, it was not required for the download version. Corel did then allow SP2 to be installed to download version, but all it did was update the version number.
Are you installing from the disc version?
If you install the program and it does not run, then download and install SP2 to allow the program to run.
Then allow the program to automatically install any other service packs available.
And as I mentioned if you download the main program now you will get the fully patched version of the program.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi Trevor,
I use Nick's download ultimate version, and in late Feb 16 after the MS updates, that install would not start. The icon blinked at me and that was it. For me, tutoring a class in movie editing using this tool, that was serious stuff. And the differences between download/DVD versions and SP's in release right then certainly confused the issue. However the relation between SP2 and the hotfix was, it took the hotfix applied to my download version to get going again.
Altho some versions of windows and VS were variously affected, win7 and X9 were particularly impacted. Not starting is about as extreme an impact as you can get. It took Corel 2 weeks to publish the hotfix to remedy that and get the program to a point where it would even start. That situation did not say much for MS or Corel, since I understand MS provides software vendors some advance warning, and there was a note in one of the KB updates released in that series to the effect that X9 would be impacted.
Since then I've applied applied the hotfixes (there was more than one, but they are not numbered and the only means of discrimination was/is the date), and then the sp's manually - mainly so I have a copy of them for cases like this. If you just update via the help menu, there's no independent copy of the SP on your PC. And even tho the Help/Updates apply SP's, as long as you internet connection is good, I've never been convinced they apply hotfixes, since they were obviously needed but not necessarily by everyone. One normally supposes any later service pack will include any prior hotfixes released, but again I've not seen any positive statement or policy to the effect from Corel. The related events have made me quite wary of X9 re-installs because it seems likely a similar condition may again occur. And hence the question. I guess there's an impirical way to find out, but I'd prefer to know before I start.

Re: X9 crashes using clip trimming handle
Hi David
Nick provided an iso version and a standard download version, then provided a boxed version.
If you install the Iso version then yes you will need the SP to fix the windows issue.
But I have installed many times from the download version and do not have to apply any patch to get the program to run. Windows 7 and Windows 10.
I would advise that you download the latest version by running the Web Installer and choosing Download only, you only need the main program.
Then if you need to re-install use the latest version.
