testing out AfterShot Pro 3 on linux at the moment.
What I'm noticing right away, AfterShot seems to blowout the highlights heavily. What looked ok on the camera (nice gradient bright sky for example) is blown out (just white) in after shot. As if I would have bossted up contrast a lot.
Is that expected? Is that a setting I could change somewhere? I guess its not related to color-management though because exporting to jpeg keeps the blown out areas.
Thanks

Re: blown out highlights
You did try using the Highlights [Recovery] and HL Range controls (on the Standard tab)? You can see which areas are blown out (yrllow, iirc) and burned out (black) by checking the Clipping Warning control in the bottom right hand corner. I always do this before frobbing with the Highlights controls.
Re: blown out highlights
yes I did .. I start to get the feeling that it is maybe related to color management. The blown highlights are less the problem itself than the transition to not blown areas, or the look up table / color-profile in general. What has a smooth gradient (from white(=blownout) to darker areas) on camera display has a much harsher edge in aftershot. In color-curves I can smooth it back to a certain degree by lifting the upper end of the curve (just below the top). The reds in general are a bit too prominent as well. Rocks that are correctly grey on the camera display appear reddish in after shot.
Which color profile are you using?

Re: blown out highlights
another question came to my mind (still new to after shot):
when I view an imported image for the first time, after shot is calculating its high quality preview, changing also the profile. It looks almost like as if the image it is showing before the calculation is more correct in terms of color and highlights than after calculating the preview. Can I disable these high quality previews?

Re: blown out highlights
On my laptop - the machine I take with me on my travels, and which runs (o dear) W10 - I run the Adobe.icm profile for soft proofing. The monitor I calibrated with Spyder 2. On my desktop (Mint 17.3), I use the calibration result I got from dispCalGui with the Spyder. I find the desktop results look distinctly hotter when I look at them from Linux. You could judge for yourself if you look at my gallery on dpreview.com - same nick - where virtually all the images will have come from the Windows copy of ASP3, or from the (sadly) Windows 10 copy of DxO Optics Pro 11. I am still working on a way to run DxO on Linux; the most recent attempt with the development release of Wine is still failing.

Re: blown out highlights
As I understand it, the high quality previews are what ASP calls "soft proofing". You can turn this off - one of the buttons in the right lower corner.borisb2 wrote:Can I disable these high quality previews?

Hi,

as far as i know the first image you see is the embeded .jpg. The same as you see on your Camera Monitor. It depends on the .jpg Settings on your cam. Then AS renders the Raw, with no Settings applied.borisb2 wrote:...
