How to make a Blur Brush

Post by fairbro »

Not sure if I am using the correct terminology, that may be why I can not find an answer -

What I have is a picture, say, with a figure in black against a white background. I want to blur the outline at the edges where the black and white meet, to create a thin zone of grey, by mixing and blurring the white and black along the edge. I had another paint software that I could create a circular "brush," say about 20 pixels wide, give it the characteristic of "blur," and run it along the edges to create this blur.

How to do this in Paint Shop Pro ( Version 8 ) ? Or is it possible?

Hmmm PSP8. Not sure if my memory is that good but in later versions you could try the Smudge or Soften brush. Those would give you lots of control.

You may duplicate the image and blur the duplicated layer.
Place the duplicate layer under the original image.
Erase areas of the top layer to see the blur.

Thanks for the help, I can use it, but what I'm really looking for is a brush. Like a paintbrush, say a yellow circle 12 pixels wide. As you move it across the palette, it leaves a trial of yellow.

Is it possible to make the brush, not only with colors, but with attributes such as "blur" or "sharpness"? As the brush is moved, it blurs or sharpness that area of the picture it is moved through.

Can you confirm fairbro that you are actually using PSP 8 which is a very old programme - or are you in fact using the relatively new X8 - it is important to differentiate

I most likely am using the old version, since I've been using it for 10 years or so! I think it's 8.03.

My problem is I was using Deluxe Paint on the Amiga a long time ago, it was a dream, so easy, and I am still trying to recreate its functionality on PSP.

I have fond memories of the JASC version of PSP but **** me that was some hard work.

Installed psp 7.0.4 in to my XP VM. i think the above might be what you have in mind.

It's under the retouch brush, the pointy finger, you will have to show the 'tools options' tool bar. and select stuff as shown.

then do yourself a favour and buy a more modern image editor.. I used to use Deluxe paint II and it best consigned to the past. To the best of my knowledge it didn't support layers and understanding layers is the key to image editing.

Actually, Jasc PSP8 is basically the same as the more recent Corel versions but with an older interface. PSP8 was a major overhaul of the program with a new interface which could be completely customized. They also added the Tool Options bar and new Materials palette. I have some of the more recent versions but I use PSP8 99.9% of the time because it's much more user-friendly than the newer versions.

The menu's are moved around, but, yes, that is what I have. Had a hard time to figure out what they mean by "step". Usually have to look up PSP questions via Google, the JASC PSP8 Help Files are kind of disjointed.

I loved Deluxe Paint on the Amiga. I gave it to an computer-illiterate artist (drawing, sculpture, oil and watercolor painting, tattoos, etc.) who taught herself how to use it in a couple of days (it was that intuitive) and produced some real artwork, even limited to 32 colors. Then when they made a PC version of Deluxe Paint , it was horrid. I am not an artist, but PSP seemed to at least do a few things (vastly better than the basic Microsoft Picture Editor) so I've been using it since. For really nice graphics (art, I mean) I would hire someone.

Layers, I've never understood layers. I know this is a dumb question, but what is the advantage of using layers? It always seemed an impediment to me in PSP8, like "why doesn't this picture really change after I've changed it?" or "How do I erase the background on my outline shape?"

That's JASC PSP8? It's looks so much different than mine. Just the top menu by itself has many more entries.

I see the "entrepreneurs" are out on Ebay selling digital downloads of PSP X8. Does Corel do nothing to stop this? (Moi is former software producer, who has seen his products ripped off big-time, especially in certain countries).

Or are the Ebayer's licensed re-sellers of Corel?
