And here's the VERY ODD COINCIDENCE! The program was fine for years! Just now it's been doing this - ever since I got the first UPGRADE OFFER for X9!
Nah, that HAS to be a coincidence, right!
Yes, I'm running the latest updated version. Does make me wonder about spending $70 or for the upgrade! Never had such crashes before, everything else on my Win10 Dell laptop (fairly new) runs fine;-/

You say jpeg format, but what about png format or gif format? Does it still crash?
I would say it might be something to do with Windows update. What is your operating system and do you remember installing any updates recently? You can check your update history to remind you and see if this coincides with the crashes beginning on your machine.
Worst come worst, you can reformat your HD and start everything all over again. I know this is a real PITA but this is to disprove any conspiracy theories that might be lingering here.

Windows 10 and yes all the updates go through. Posting here as much to see if others have run into the issue lately (if it is a Win10 update it wouldn't just be me.) I really do think it's a wild coincidence, I left my tinfoil hat at the cleaners:-)

And do you have Dropbox as some others have been experiencing some problems with a version of that, and need to apply an update to that. If it was a bug with the program then many others woudl be experiencing it so may be your system or the other programs you are running which may cause problems.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Re: PSP X8 crashing when I save JPEG
PSPx8 is crashing almost every 1 in 5 times I save an image (as PSP file). It just says 'stopped working'. It has not saved the image and then I start again. I have used different versions of PSP for years and now I am getting problems. Is it Windows 10. Fed up.

Re: PSP X8 crashing when I save JPEG
If I can pop in with an idea on this, an application crashing while saving could be a number of things, but a couple pop into mind:
A problem with the drive being saved to can cause issues (if the program 'doesn't know what to do' when it runs into an issue saving a file). How old is the drive? You can try saving to another drive/partition, or to an internal drive if you are saving to an external/USB drive, etc. Just to see if it doesn't have this problem on another drive...
Another thing it could be is general hardware issues (RAM getting older, overheating, etc). These types of failures/crashes can also happen if there is a hardware issue of some type.
Try dusting out the PC case or shoot some air through the Laptop, to see if it helps stop the crashing. If it does, then it may have been due to overheating from the dust buildup.
If you have the financial means, you can also try purchasing new RAM modules and seeing if changing them out stops the crashing. If it doesn't, then you can put the old ones back in and save the New ones for a future Upgrade. I would personally suggest running a Memory Diagnostic (RAM Test) on your system regardless, since something is crashing (anything is crashing).
You could also try re-installing the program (PSP). Sometimes, the drive files/system files/Windows/Registry can get corrupted (in a minor way) over time and reinstalling a program will replace or reorganize the files in a way that is 'fresh' and can be a good test to make sure other things are working fine (eg. if there are more errors, a drive or Windows may be having issues). This is why many products have a "Repair" option in the Programs and Features/Uninstall area.
These are just some ideas off of the top of my head. Please don't consider them a form of telling you that you are incorrect or that it is not PSP's fault. I just have had these things happen in the past and have seen them happen to others and technically I know that these are possible, so I list them here just as Suggestions of things to possibly try
