MXF files not recognised by Videostudio 9.5

Post by fnannery »

I was delighted to see after all my pestering of Corel they finally gave support to MXF files in the latest version. I have downloaded the trial version of videostudio 9.5 but it wont recognise the mxf files from my Canon XF100. Its saying file format mismatch. Am I missing something? Im using Windows 10 64 bit pc.

The trial version is severely crippled, apparently for commercial reasons, with Corel not being willing to pay licence fees for things like certain proprietary codecs when the trial version is free. Silly since it does not enable any sort of trial for people like you who are wanting to test specific features.

Guys

I have some mxf files from a Sony XDCam HD422 but Corel Ultimate 9 will not import these. Why is Corel misleading patrons regarding mxf files?

According to the Corel VSX9 User Guide, MXF format can only be imported into the Ultimate version, this is clearly not the case, VSX10 also, is unable to import them

Is this not a misrepresentation of product capabilities by Corel? Their Technical Support Services is beating around the bush on this one without coming to the core of the problem.

This is not meant as an excuse for Corel, but may be a partial explanation of what is going on. MXF is yet another wrapper format which can be used to wrap or cover a variety of formats. I would suspect that Corel might be wrong in claiming VS can handle MXF if by that it implies that it can handle *ALL* formats covered by the wrapper MXF. Looking up Wikipedia, for example, I note that:
Sony's XDCAM MXF is supported by Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro X, Autodesk Smoke, Avid, Capella systems, Dalet, EVS, Imagine Communications Corp., Omneon, Quantel, Rhozet, Sony Vegas Pro, Sorenson Squeeze, Telestream FlipFactory, GrassValley EDIUS, Grass Valley K2, and Merging Technologies VCube.
You will see from this that these programs are rather high end ones and don't include lower end products like VS. Unfortunately, I cannot find a similar list for Canon video cameras like the one the OP has, but I suspect it could be similar for that.

I see that your Sony was introduced in 2008 and was at the top end of the camera scale. But even at the time, MXF already existed, though there were apparently incompatibilities in the MXF format used by Sony and that used by Panasonic. But I confess that is all I know about the format. I am just wondering, though, if the 2008 version of MXF was regarded by Corel as being too 'old' to work on compatibility with programs like VS which came out seven or eight years later...

But frankly, I just don't know...

FWIW I brought this thread to the attention of Corel developers in charge of Video Studio. They have advised that VS at the moment only supports MXF produced using the H.264 codec. They are apparently working on extending this to other formats included in the MXF wrapper. However, when this will happen remains unclear.

But I have to say I agree that Corel should make this clear in their advertising of VS...

Thanks Ken

Corel should really clarify which mxf files work with their software - right now their Technical team is supposed to be looking into my issue - it has been four days and they are still going round.
