Videostudio pro x8 sound plays in clip but not project mode

Hi

Have interrogated FAQ but can't trace any real answer this problem. All I have been able to find was a similar query from another member for an x4 version but no satisfactory resolution. I have successfully edited a good number of completed videos using x8 without a problem but on the latest editing project (using the same camera and settings as before) I can only hear audio when playing individual clips and and not when in 'project' mode.

Ideas would be most welcome.

Since you have told us absolutely nothing about your video apart from the fact that it's video, it is impossible to even hazard a guess at what the problem might be. So can we start by you right clicking on one of the clips in the VS timeline and copying ALL its Properties here, please -- or take a screen shot of the Properties box and upload it here as an Attachment. It might also be useful if you told us what sort of camera made it.

Also, when you inserted the first clip into the timeline, did you get a message asking if you wanted the Project Properties to match those of the clip? If not, what are the Project Properties and what are you trying to make?

I naively thought there might be a simple generic answer to this problem so didn't want to overload the detail initially.

I shoot my video in 1080 on a Panasonic HLC - HS900 with a view to rendering it to MPEG2 for burning to Blu-ray and possibly an MP4 version. I attached a screen grab of the properties you asked for.

I did you get a message asking if I wanted the Project Properties to match those of the clip and said yes.

Hi

Those properties are for a BMP image not video.

Panasonic 900 records to MTS video files and as such are compatible to burning a Bluray disc.
Although the extension will use either m2t or m2ts

After editing your project choose Share – same as first clip will use the properties of your video file creating a file suitable to burn to disc.

I also use a 900 video recorder and do not have issues in editing or burning a BD.
Set at HA1920 for best quality and for discs use 25 fps / 29.97 fps not 50P/60P.

Doh!!............that'll teach me not to concentrate. Attached now is the correct screen grab for the video properties. My mistake has rather thrown you off the scent. I do already know how to render to M2t and MP4 and have done so many times. The issue is as per the subject line above so your thoughts regarding my specific problem would be appreciated.

Hi Andy

I see your files are MTS, I assume you copied and pasted the files from the camera to your pc.
To burn a Bluray disc we have to use 25fps as 1920 x 1080 x 50p is not supported by Bluray.
But that should not affect the audio playback..

You may have done this….. It is best to match our project properties to the video properties.
First go to Settings – project properties, what are they?

Now go to Preferences (F6) tick “Show messages when inserting first clip….”
Start a new project and add your video to the top track, you should get a message asking to match properties. Say yes to that.

Does that improve things.?

If no, change the volume from 100% to 99%,

As I say I have used 50P .MTS video with no problems so don’t really understand why you should have issues?
and just checked X8 again with audio problems.

I imported the files from my camera. They are always MTS files and I always render M2t to 25 fps for burning to Blu-ray.

Re your second and third paragraphs I always match project properties to the video properties (attached are project properties) and “Show messages when inserting first clip….” permanently ticked.

Finally I've tried reducing volume to 99% and it makes no difference. I get audio when playing clips but not playing project.

I cannot see it being the video file as I have the same beasts and they play without problems.
But if you wish us to check those, upload to a sharing site, DropBox, OneDrive etc.


I recently updated to windows 10, not that it should affect things. But I found my Voice Over would not work for both X8 and X9. I reinstalled both programs to no avail.
I then un-installed my audio drivers, just used the defaults that come with windows and all is fine, re-installed on next boot.

Can you check Voice Over and Screen Capture to see if you are having other audio issues?

So I guess you could try re-installing the audio drivers?

Ah, that's interesting. I too have recently updated to Windows 10. I won't sadly have time to look at this over the next day or two but will report back as soon as I can.

Only just had a chance to look at this again.

It doesn't seem to be an audio drivers issue nor the Windows 10 upgrade.

The files play well in both clip and project up until a point in the edit (this point can vary) where one of three things might happen;

1) The edit will only play in 'clip' and not project.
2) Will continue to play in clip or project.
3) Will play in neither.

I thought I might have stumbled on something when I right clicked and the 'reset volume' option was available to me; interestingly this is 'greyed out' for most clips?!

I don't seem to be having any other audio issues and like you I don't think there's a fault with the files having loaded them into my x6 version without a problem.

Hi Andy

As far as I know Reset Volume is available from the SoundMixer panel.

If you are applying a few filters, changing volume, a bit of extra edits to a clip, you may need to activate Smart Proxy from the Settings menu.
Then any new clip added to the timeline will have Proxy files created, they do take a while to render so be patient.
For clips already on the timeline, right click for Create Proxy Files.

A small icon will show on the clip when proxy files are being used.

This should improve project playback.

This may not be your problem but worth a try

I deleted the row of troublesome clips, re-imported them, applied your suggestions and..................Bingo!

I'm not sure if there is already a Saint Trevor but, if not, I intend to sponsor your immediate canonisation (on the negative side as you have to be dead for this to happen you might not be quite as enthusiastic about it as I am). If only I had known last week........I was in Vatican City then!.
