Paint Shop Pro Ultimate Photo X2 not working correctly

Post by DaleM »

Up until this morning I could open the program with no issues and could right click any .jpg file and "open with Paint Shop Pro X2." Suddenly the program stopped opening in either case. I tried a "Repair" but no luck. I uninstalled the program and shut the PC down. Restarted PC and reinstalled software. Now it only opens if I right click and choose to Open as Administrator or set the properties to do so. However I can no longer right click a .jpg image and open it. I get "There was a problem sending the command to the program" error. I can navigate to the .jpg file and open it manually in the program though. I have other software that I've set the editor to use PSP X2 to open the image but that no longer works either.

What could have happened between using the program this morning and this afternoon to cause this? I haven't updated any system files or installed any programs.

What Operating System are you using? If Windows 10 you can have all kinds of problems.
Look for any other changes made to your system, and you can always try a System Restore back to the date when PSP was working properly.

Windows 7 Home 64-bit. Can't blame it on Widows 10 as my wife's newer PC has Windows 10 and it runs fine on her PC. IMO, a System Restore is greatly over rated. I seriously doubt I have a corrupted system file since the program was working correctly in the morning but not the afternoon. PC was not shut down, no updates or programs were installed during the 1 or 2 hours between when it was working and stopped working. If anything I'd think one of the program files got corrupted somehow. But I uninstalled the program then reinstalled it and had the same results.

Windows 7 Home 64-bit. I just can't image any system file getting corrupted in the 1 or 2 hours I wasn't using the program. PC was never shut down and no programs or updates were installed during that period.

So it appears your files are OK. Since you reinstalled, make sure to apply the updates- http://scrapbookcampus.com/resources/psp-patches/

Reading more carefully your original post (sorry), it still appears to be a quirky Windows problem.

Review your file associations in Windows (search Help in how to), try right click and open with another image program and see what happens, also when right clicking on image, from menu Open With and then Choose Default Program and reselect PSP.

Otherwise review your User Accounts in Windows- and Permission under Security for your photo folders and files-
and/or try this with PSP.exe-

I double-checked the properties on the .exe file and it's set to "Run program as an administrator" and that's the only way it'd even open. I have X2 on my Windows 10 laptop and my wife's Windows 10 PC but don't have to have that box checked nor any compatibility modes set. Can't say if they were ever checked before the problem but I'd guess not since it's always worked from the out-of-the-box installation. I can right-click and open any .jpg file with any number of other programs I have such as SnagIT, PSP v4.0, PSP v7, Adobe Photo Elements 11, Corel Photo-Paint X6, as well as the temporary trial version of Corel Paintshop Pro X9 - I only get the error with my old reliable X2. I can open X2, navigate to any .jpg file and open it just fine, I just can't right-click and select X2 to open it.

I have X9 ordered so I've set .jpg files to open with that program in my Expression Web program as a default. In Windows Explorer I have .jpgs associated with Windows Photo Viewer since I more often than not just want to see what the image is. Just has me stumped why it quit working within a couple of hours.

Sorry you couldn't get it working after all your work.
I've only had weird stuff like this happen to me for no reason with one other program- Roxio.
Anyway, good luck.

Thanks. I'm getting the hang of X9 in trial mode until my copy arrives hopefully by next week.

DaleM! I had the same problem this weekend, but unlike you, I use x2 *exclusively* (since it came out back when). I do not like anything else.
I even have (but do not use) Photoshop CS4 & CS5 but with psp x2, I can *FLY* through anything, cos I know where everything is! (I make flyer-type ads for death metal promotion and many-many other things, daily, for multiple years) Back-when, I even had a hard time moving from Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7, but quickly adapted to x2. Heck::: I still use Jasc Animation Shop 3 (any suggestions on newer GIF programs would be great as Jasc is very clunky & old, but gets it done)
I signed up to corel dot com just to get in on this-very forum post. (I do not do this anywhere. So please forgive me if I am discordant or unconventional at this. I don't even really do SpaceBook, myface or whatever its called)
However; I did what rondo suggested in his image and that sorta worked, but currently have to give permission every time psp x2 opens. (I'll fix that, but...
My problem now is; I cannot drag/drop images into psp x2 anymore. UGH! I will continue to fix this and report back to here for future die-hard psp x2 users like me. (should I just/only start a new thread?)
Also, I am having the same problem, like DaleM, with right-click open-with psp x2 saying [There was a problem sending the command to the program] > This all started sometime last weekend.
On a side note, back when Paintshop Pro x3 became available, I tried, but hated it. It was wayyyy tooooo different for my taste and did stuff I didn't like. (that was so long ago, I forget what bugged me) But I haven't tried to upgrade ever since. Please let me know what you think of x9 > I would really like to know.
Not sure it matters but, my machine is an (older) i7 2.66GHz, 6GB/ram, 64-bit, win7proSP1 with an SSD c/drive, dual monitor. I should probably just/only put that in the signup thing(s) I saw.

[edit 8/23/2016] Out of nowhere, today psp x2 works for me like normal! This seemed to be only temporary! ~Good luck!

You are not alone with this problem. It has affected many other PSP users in Win 7, this week. Intel released updates for its video drivers last week, so perhaps it is connected to that.
If I recall from my previous testing, once the program is set to Run as Administrator, you cannot right click a file and choose Open With or Sent to.
If the tick is removed from Run as Admin, then the options work again, but that won't help you if you can't open the program unless it is set to Run as Admin.

I swear I've done nothing to change any settings and I've been working all day with graphic images, primarily in X9, and opening them in various ways (right-click image and choosing X9, opening X9 and opening .jpg files, etc.) But, now X2 is working as it should. I can right-click a .jpg file and open it in X2 with no problems. Just for fun I took the "Run as administrator" restriction off X2 and even that's working now - I can open X2 just be clicking its program icon. I had just resigned to uninstall X2 when my full copy of X9 comes but now I think I'll leave them both.

I'm beginning to like X9 more and more as I use it. Kinda like you, if it isn't broken don't fix it. Taking some getting used to but I do like the "Manage" feature that lets me navigate the many folders I have of images and see what is in each folder. I can then simply select one, choose the Edit tab and work on it. I'm doing a book on Chevelles and have a lot of images to 'preview' before choosing which will work and this does make it easier. I have dual monitors and typically would use one to navigate through the folders with Windows Photo Viewer to find the image I wanted then open it in X2; now I don't have to to that. I admit I only use very few of the features, mainly crop, resize, and occasionally I'll pixelate a small area and I use JASC PSP 4 for any coloring of backgrounds and adding text along with SnagIT editor for arrows, balloons, etc. With X9 I just have to play with it some more but I think I'll like it. Now, if I can just figure out how to change the black menu bars to a lighter gray like X2, I'll be happy. I'm there's an option somewhere, just need to find it.

There are options for the Workspace and Background colors at the bottom of the View menu.

While most posts are about people with Win 7 there is one with Win 10 and I saw another on the net with Vista having the same, sudden problem of an older version of PSP not opening. FWIW, I'm on Win 8.1 and do have Jasc's PSP 9 installed and it still works fine.
