.VSP project file corrupt.. Recover possible?

Post by goldenboy »

Hi. I opened my .VSP project file with a text editor and unfortunally saved the project file within it and Video Studio now can't open my project file anymore :(

Unfortunally I didn't make a backup of the project file.
I fear the worst and that all the work is gone.

Can anyone help?

Hi

Unfortunately the easy answer is “No”

There is no way we know of to modify or edit the VSP file, yes we can open in NotePad but it does not read the script correctly. Even so I would not know where to start to correct / edit the script.

As you have found doing so will corrupt the file.

You have no option but to re-build the project.

If you do wish to view the VSP files content via notepad then make sure you create a copy of the VSP.
and if you do find an editor that will edit the VSP files please let us know?

I opened the VSP file with windows standard editor.
The thing is, although you don't modify nothing in the .VSP file, it's enough to save it as a text file with the windows standard editor to don't let the project file work anymore in Video Studio..

With notepad if you open and save the .VSP it won't corrupt the .VSP file, so long as you dont't modify nothing.

but why do you keep opening .vsp files in any sort of editor - do you know how to edit them - if yes we would like to know

if you don't know how to edit them they are best left alone - if you want to experiment with them then first make a copy of the .vsp and work on that

There was a relink problem with a video file, which I had to move to another drive because I was out of memory.

So I decided to have a look at the .VSP file with txt editor to find the root of that video file.
But as I saw all that cryptic stuff in the editor, I decided to leave my hands off from it.

I know that was very stupid not to make a backup from the project file before, but I thought if you don't modify nothing,
nothing will happen and nothing will be affected. Unfortunally I hit that save button in the txt editor, and from there on,
it won't open anymore in Video Studio..

Hi

Ok if you did not change anything -- did saving change the files extension, maybe to txt?
Just a thought.
Can you check that the extension is .VSP

If you zip the file and Attach to your post we can try to open the project, not that we will be able to see the content, but a long shot?

Re-Link

When you see a re-link request the details of the files last location is shown, take a note of that then browse to find the file.

Hi, thx again for your reply..
No, the saving didn't change the file extension, it's still .VSP

But I think it was saved to ANSI by default...

Hi

Sorry i am unable to do anything with that file.
When i open in Note Pad i can decipher some details (E:\MK10 2016-01-12 21-05-18-31.avi)
so something survived

But a large empty section.
Worth a try, but sorry no success.

I took a shot in the dark to try mending the file. But ... it will take 10-13 hours as reported by my software.
I don't have that time now and tomorrow I'm out of town. I'm not promising it will work, as it's very dark in there.

Well, very strangely after 30 minutes of work my software reports "remaining 23 hours "
I can't let it to work so long .
after 45 min it start counting again from 0 so it's now at ~ 25 hours and rising.
I admit it's very intriguing , as mere slightly corrected I get just error from VS and not a complete crash .
Golden, many text editors saves backup with ~, have you looked for such?

I stopped the process.
look golden, I see just the macro problem and not the micro.
so even if that "might" be corrected it can still be totally wrong or you hit the jackpot.
I use Hex editor , in it I'm replacing all "20 20" with "00 00" in that vsp.
I do them in duo as there might be single 20 in the vsp that should be there and I don't want to remove all of them.
It's a shot in the dark , eyes covered, not aligned pistol and a moving target, but this is all I can suggest.

Too bad your software couldn't handle it..

I don't think Microsoft editor makes a backup copy with ~, at least I found nothing on google if or where sth. is saved by the editor.

That's the same thing I'm trying with hex editor, but it's a real torture. It's not only the "20 20's" to replace with "00 00" as you said. I'm replacing also other single "20's" with "00" with a certain pattern.

After all these replacements in hex editor, Video Studio at least shows the loading bar again starting at 1% when you load the project.

edit:
Got it working to 68% now.. But I got no idea what else to replace..
This should be the offset where it gets stuck at 68%:

Image

If someone could give me some advice if there's any pointers or sth. else important to know in that specific bytes block where that pattern is visible, I really would appreciate it.

Well, the project file loads up again now. There was a nullbyte at 0x3f05fd that had to be replaced also with "20".

Image

But unfortunalley, I guess there have to be replaced some more nullbytes with "20"'s, because if you press the play button
yout get the error message "It has been detected a wrong argument"..

Image

Any advice, which bytes are responible for passing this or these arguments would be very apreciated...

if the project now looks complete but will not play it may be worth doing a "File >> Save AS" and creating a new .vsp with a new name

either that may now give you a playable .vsp or you may be able to compare the two files and look for differences

Golden, you have your timeline, print it.
Well, let it be a lesson for all who like to poke into what they shouldn't.
Never do so with the simple notepad, there are other more powerful and harmful tools out there.
.... and always on a copy
