RotoPen and Panning

Post by okyou »

Is anyone has done a RotoPen path while the frame is panning ?
I have a narrow vertical strip of map which I can enlarge and pan vertically from top to bottom. However, I also like to have a RotoPen car effect following one of the highway while the map is rolling downward  . Can it be done in VS X9 ?

Thanks for any sharing idea or suggestions.

Hi

I have not used Roto Pen that much so a little rusty.

But was able to set vertical P&Z -- I did have to zoom-In to keep the image in full view.

I then apply Roto Pen to show a track from bottom to top having the car symbol.
I was not using a Map so I don’t know if it would stay on track.
I would need a map image to try that?

Thanks
I was able to apply the panning and rotopen together, but syncing them together on a certain route is the problem.

Hi

Apply Roto Pen to the road map.
Render the clip to a new video file

Apply Pan and Zoom to that new video file.

Post updated

i think your image should be the same size or aspect as your project frame size.
for Hd that would be 1920 x 1080, or multiples of, at least 16:9 ratio

Thanks for your idea. I tried and it worked with the frame size you said it would. Unfortunately the map route I tried to use is a long narrow strip from top to bottom and I can't figure out a way to format it to 16:9 ratio without losing major part of the map. It would be cool if this RotoPen can be done like the pan in a photo where a long strip photo can be zoom to fit the window while it is panning downward. Maybe I am asking too much for VS to accomplish.

Hi

Modify image by adding borders left and right to produce a 16:9 shape.
You are best using an image editor but vs can do that, but resolution may be reduced, depends on the resolution of original.

Using VS,
Project properties set to use 1920 x 1080
place image on top timeline.

In project playback take a snapshot, (Edit – Snapshot) image saved to working folder, thumbnail placed in library.
Should be 1920 x 1080 -- project size.
Use that image in rotopen.

I'm not certain my suggestion will be applicable to your situation. It's just something I thought of after reading that you wanted to maintain the original full map size and 'zoom to fit' your RotoPen effect. I saw this video by Gripps on using the Magnifying Glass. Maybe it will help you accomplish what you wish to do. Note: His tutorial is for VS8 but, it will also work with VS9.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have no problem making the RotoPan in a 1920x1080 map and turn it into a video clip. Which filter should I use to pan video ? Thanks.
