Hi

I would suspect that is the black space that you removed?

I would like to have a look at the X7 vsp, are you able to Zip and attach to your post.

It's not obvious that this is the case as blank space is not synonymous with black space.

The X7 VSP file is attached (pwd sent via PM).

Hi tletter
Wow a lot going on here, a lot of work.

I think the blank space is the 1 sec crossfade, Video Studio being confused, why X7 did not complain is another matter. Although it does not show when I open in X9.
Some things I found that may cause the program to complain
1 / Project Properties are set to DV-AVI using 60fps, I find that strange as your videos are a mix of MP4 and MTS, are they also using 60fps, in particular P1050460.MP4.
What are you intending to make? if a Disc then you may have been best using 29.97 fps.

2 / at 46 : 25 ish there are a combination of video clips having various edits applied
Mercalli, Speed Timelapse and if P1050460.MP4 is using 30fps not 60fps will not help.
So what is the frame rate of P1050460.MP4?

Anyway I have removed the two 1 sec crossfades, that has changed the timings of the last clips, text etc.
Using your project remove the clips from the top track from 00:46:14:30 including P1050460.MP4. Rebuild the top track without the Cross fades
Given the complexity of this project I would complete using X7, then use X9 for new work.

The properties that I use on the share tab are shown in the attached image (see share-properties.jpg). So far X7 has no problem rendering using these properties.
lata wrote:What are you intending to make?
A file for viewing on a computer or TV.
lata wrote:So what is the frame rate of P1050460.MP4?
The frame rate is 59fps (see file-properties.jpg).

Agreed and thanks for your advice. I've continued working on this project in X7. However, the concern is that pre-X9 VSP file are not always seamlessly imported into X9. Hence older versions of VS should not be removed unless one can live with not being able to open certain older VSP files in X9.

Is there any reason--besides not having used smart package--for a project not to open at all on another computer,
even though all the files have been transferred to that second machine? (Both machines have X8 installed.) Or is smart package necessary
to be able to do that? Question two: Can a project originally created in X7 be opened at all in X8 or X9?

Hi Mark Lis

We should be able to open a VSP in another pc provided it opens and plays ok in the original pc.
We can open VSP’s made in earlier versions, whether they can replicate the edits is debatable.
Smart Package is not essential but desirable.

When we compose our projects files / clips are added to the timelines, those files could be anywhere on our pc, if we then use sample video or Instant Projects then other files are used stored in the Video Studio filing system, somewhere?

We can of course move all those files to a new pc, providing we can find them?
Smart Package will create copies of all clips used on the timelines irrespective of there PC location, these files being saved to a single folder, the Smart Package folder.
Moving that to another pc and we are sure all files have been transferred.
Opening a VSP will probably request a re-link, usually targeting the first clip on the timeline, that will re-link all clips used in the project.

If we do not use Smart Proxy, relinking may not be as easy, and if we have missed a file, would have to access the old pc to find the culprit.

Opening older projects in newer versions may have its problems, but the project should open.

Using older projects may use different editing techniques not available in X9.
The list of anomalies could be endless.
We know Windows updates affected Video Studio, did that have adverse affect on x7 to x9
Smart Sound is no longer used in X9, a warning will be given when opening those files.
Earlier versions were 32 bit, does using those in 64 bit programs cause problems.
NewBlue purchased filters would need to be installed on both machines
Mercalli stabilisation, we know that will need a re-scan, but no warning.
If Smart Proxy was used those files may need creating again.

I am working on old projects made with X4 / 5, they were DV-Avi in the days of DVD.
I now intend to convert to Bluray.
Opening the projects, no problems as I had created Smart Packages, even so a few clips were missing, user error, Upps. No heavy or complicated edits, just normal stuff.
Mercalli needed re-scanning, other wise I was able to open ok.

So yes it works depending on the complexity of your projects.

I have now re-copied all the files using smart package and still cannot open the project on another computer.
Both computers are Windows 7, and both use VS X8.
Clicking on Open Project and then the .VSP file causes the hourglass to spin for a few seconds then stop, then nothing.

Hi Mark Lis

Irrespective of having the clips used in the project, it should open, but request a Re-link.
If nothing appears to happen, either the VSP file is corrupt or maybe trying to open X8 in X7.

Did you use X9 trial to open these project files?

Can you Zip the VSP and attach to your post.
As I say if the VSP is intact we can open the project even though we cannot view its content.

There are occasions where the VSP file is corrupt, no idea why that should be, but that is terminal with no way of fixing that, sorry obviously not what you wished to hear.....

Hi Mark Lis

Another thought
Can you Check for Updates on the new PC. Then view the About to make sure you are running 18.6.0.6 .

Looks like the problem was with the updates all along. On the second PC, when I checked for updates, I was informed none were available,
even though the version is an old 18.0.0.181. So I went to the Corel site and manually downloaded 7 available updates. The version changed to 18.6.0.6
and the project now opens. However, the "Check for Updates" function is certainly not functioning; which is a problem for another topic and day.
