X9 (19.5.0.35) cannot relink all video clips in X7 VSP

Post by tletter »

I created a VSP in X7 and then transferred all the project files to another computer (both computers are running Win 10). However, when trying to open the X7 VSP on the new computer running X9, X9 complains about video clips not being the correct duration (see screen capture) eventhough the clips are identical to those linked to in X7. There are no filters applied to the files that X9 chokes on and X7 can successfully relink all files in their new location so the issue is due to faulty relinking in X9.

This situation is frustrating with no apparent solution in X9 - the solution was to open the X7 VSP in the new location with X7 and then save the relinked X7 VSP file. X9 can then open this relinked X7 VSP file but without X7 you cannot fix the X9 relink issue.

In short, there is a flaw in how X9 determines if video clips are identical to that referred to in a pre-X9 VSP. This makes uninstalling older versions of VS hazardous if you want to successfully open pre-X9 VSPs with X9.

Upon further examination, X9 does not properly open the relinked X7 VSP file. The problem is that the video track has a blank space in it which I thought was not possible. It is not straightforward to get rid of this blank space without a lot of work.

It is surprising the difficulty that X9 has in opening VSP files created by older versions of VS.

A blank space would indicate that that particular clip has been moved from its original location, or that it is corrupt, hence the relink message, what happens if you open your project in VSX7, do you still get the relink message for that clip

To clarify, there is no blank space in the completely successfully relinked X7 VSP file, rather the blank space is found in X9 when it opens that X7 VSP file.

While I've seen a white space between two clips on the video track when VS cannot relink a clip, I've never seen a blank space between two clips on the video track. In fact I've never been able to create a blank space between two clips on the video track and doubt that it's possible to manually do so. Two seclusive clips automatically butt up against one another and a blank space cannot be left in my experience.

The conclusion is that X9 cannot reliably open all X7 VSP files which means that older versions of VS must be kept installed if one wants to reliably open older VSP files.

Not sure what's going on with your project, just tried importing some old VSX7 .vsp files and they all open correctly.
Can you try creating a Smart Package in VSX7, then open the package in VSX9 and advise if that loads correctly

.

So when you open the project in X7 what is in the top track between 00:46:20:00 and 00:46:30:00

Hi

Your first image shows the library with two clips having a yellow symbol, that indicates the files need re-linking, probably you have deleted them, a bit of concern
Is it possible that you are having problems with clips contained in the project file VSP.

The error message could be associated with using Speed Timelapse.
If you have used that option in X7 then opening in X9 may give the error message regarding clip length, although i thought Corel had fixed this issue.

Are you running X9 fully patched?

As mentioned, there is a blank space, i.e. nothing, between the two clips on the video track over that period. Now you can have such a blank space in an overlay track, however, I don't believe a user can create it in the video track.

In my experience, the ability of X9 to seamlessly open pre-X9 VSP files is questionable. Hence users ought to beware before uninstalling old versions of VS if they want to work on pre-X9 VSP files.

Hi

I would suspect the blank space is being occupied by a clip that is showing as black and apparently invisible against the background.
I would suspect the properties of that clip or edits applied to that clip that VS 9 does not like.

Are you able to Zip the project file (vsp) and attach to your post.
Although we cannot view the actual files / clips we may be able to re-link to our files to identify any problems.

If you open that project in X7, what edits / filters have been applied to that particular clip?

Not the case - there is simply nothing there.
lata wrote:If you open that project in X7, what edits / filters have been applied to that particular clip?
The newly attached image shows the speed and three filters that were applied in X7. The 2nd image that I attached earlier in this topic shows how X9 incorrectly imported this X7 VSP.

The other issue is that the X7 VSP file contained many video clips stabilized with proDAD Mercalli. However while both X7 and X9 state that they use proDAD Mercalli 2.0.123 Tech.r79, Mercalli required that all the clips had to be reanalyzed in X9. Why the reanalysis was required is unclear but it was an big effort and waste of time.

It is too bad that VS does not have a way of reanalyzing clips using Mercalli in a batch mode. It is also too bad that when you render a VSP, VS does not alert you that there are clips requiring reanalysis by Mercalli instead the file is rendered with the Mercalli warning notices displayed.

Hi

Well it is very strange that there is nothing there as the top timeline cannot have spaces.

Speed Timelapse
As I mentioned that option has caused problems when opening vsp’s in X9 but was fixed with one of the service packs, (afaik)
I did ask if you were using a fully patched X9?

Mercalli, yes I have had a similar problem having to rescan Mercalli, and indeed rendering being allowed when re-scanning is required.
I don’t think anyone has raised this with Corel Support.

I am not sure what affect mixing Mercalli stabilisation and Timelapse has on the clip, the latest image shows you doing that? But changing the number of frames in the clip after applying Mercalli may cause a rescan? Just a thought.

So I can understand your problems except the black clip?
The clip immediately after P1060460.mp4, what effects if any have been applied to that one.

Video Studio and mp4 files, there have been some issues with mp4 clips displaying black, Corel providing several fixes which were apparently applied to the X7 service packs, however the last hot fix for X7 may have been missed, a replacement to ulmp4lib.dll file.

For X7

Sorry I thought that the version of X9 that I was using was clear from the name of the topic but to repeat it's X9 (19.5.0.35). There are NO newer updates available via the X9 update feature.
lata wrote:I am not sure what affect mixing Mercalli stabilisation and Timelapse has on the clip, the latest image shows you doing that?
Every single video clip using Mercalli required a reanalysis and not just ones with a speed adjustment. If X7 and X9 are really using the same version of Mercalli then it's not clear why a reanalysis would be required.
lata wrote:So I can understand your problems except the black clip?
I don't see a 'black clip' rather I see an absence of anything, i.e. a blank space just one can create in an overlay track.
lata wrote:The clip immediately after P1060460.mp4, what effects if any have been applied to that one.
It's an avi file with no speed adjustment or filters applied (see att image).

I have manually corrected the VSP once imported into X9 but it's just a lot of work for no gain. Oh well.

To get rid of the blank space, I selected everything to the right of this space on the video track and dragged it over top of the space. VS warned that this would turn off ripple editing but it got rid of the blank space. However, objects in the other tracks had to be then adjusted to account for ripple editing being turned off.

The X7 VSP file that was imported into X9 fails to render in X9. At around 99% of rendering in X9, a message pops up saying "Frame 0 is unreadable", pressing OK is the only option and there is no incomplete file found in the specified file location.

Fortunately the VSP file renders in X7 - another reason not to uninstall older versions of VS if you want to render all pre-X9 VSP files.
