Choppy video playback in VS Pro x8 preview screen

Post by Sponge »

I'm getting sluggish playback performance when previewing a video I'm working on. This has happened on every project I've ever worked on, under different versions of Windows, even on multiple computer configurations.

Usually is noticeable when I have added or edited a video clip in a project, then I place the cursor on the timeline over a clip prior to the one I added. That way, I can watch the transition between clips. The first clip usually plays fine, but the next clip's video will be choppy. The sound will play fine. Often, it stops being choppy after a few seconds, sometimes not.

My PC is relatively new and definitely fast - Core i7-4790 CPU with 32GB RAM and dual SSDs.

My program version is x8 Pro (18.6.0.6 64-bit Pro). I have Service Pack 3 installed.

Appreciate any help!

You haven't told us the Properties of the video you are editing -- though as you say, with your setup it should not really matter, even if the video is 4K.

But have you ever used SmartProxy which is a feature of Video Studio? It creates standard definition copies ("proxies") of the original high definition video in a project which plays back well and easier to edit. When you have finished your edits, they are then applied back to the high def originals. You have to be patient, though, since it takes a while for the proxies to be generated. You can switch on SmartProxy in Preferences.
