How to make video studio recognize the background
I have a video of myself singing and I thought it would be cool to put text on the wall behind me. The text would be blocked by me if I stepped in front of it.
The way I thought to do this is to somehow input the full background into VideoStudio. Then put text on the video, but it will only show up where the saved background appears.
Maybe copy the part of the video that is not background, (me), and then place it in front of the text and background.
My guess is that VideoStudio doesn't have this ability, but let me know if it does, or if there is other software that could do this.
Thanks.

If you shoot when the background is solid green (or blue) than you can do so in VS.
it calls Chroma keying. google that.

Re: How to make video studio recognize the background
Videostudio does have the ability to do what you want - but only if you work in the right direction
what is behind you in the video of you singing - is a fairly plain background - if yes then put your text in the top track - you in an overlay track and invoke 'Chroma Key' (green screen)
if the background behind you is complicated then you may have to create a video mask (in Videostudio) to separate you from the background - fairly complicated but can be done

Re: How to make video studio recognize the background
The background isn't a plain color. I actually would prefer the background to be busy, so that I can put the text "on" the objects, such as a shelf. But when I move in front of the text, I'd like it to look blocked.
Could you point me in the right direction for the method of video masking?
By video masking, do you mean this method: basically using the background image as a green screen, so anywhere that the pixels in the video match the saved background image, the text can go over it. Anywhere the pixels don't match, the text in that area will not be shown.
Or using the same green screen method, but instead, cutting out my body, which can then be placed over the background and text.

Re: How to make video studio recognize the background
So the method I thought of might be harder than I thought, since the camera isn't ever completely still, so the pixels would almost never exactly match up. Maybe VideoStudio has a "smart" version of this, that can achieve this even with pixels moving about.
I guess if I had a green screen then I could put both a photo of the background and the animated text behind me. I don't have a green screen though, and I'm assuming it's out of my price range.
I would like to do this text thing with an already made video, so no green screen there.

Re: How to make video studio recognize the background
Green screen is basically a green cloth easily available on Amazon for example. You will need to support the cloth so that it is flat with no wrinkles, perhaps off a curtain rail. You film yourself in front of the green cloth with the lighting as directly behind the camera as you can get (flat lighting) so no shadows are cast by lights at an angle.
You put the wall on the main timeline and your green screen file on the first overlay track. Invoke the green screen effect and you can then control the transparency etc. from the effect options. the green should disappear to show the wall behind you.
Perfection comes with experiment and practice. I have had my grandkids flying like Superman and a model lighthouse perched on some perilous rocks.
Other options. You could photo the wall and writing and use the .jpeg image on the main timeline or film, without moving the camera, once with the plain wall and then again with you singing in front of the wall. Plain wall in main timeline and you in the overlay. Then play with the transparency of the overlay track. I have used this for ghost effects.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: How to make video studio recognize the background
I don't want a ghost effect, though. I did some searching and it looks like the method is called difference matte. Almost all of the tutorials were for After Effects, though.
Maybe I'll download the free trial of After Effects after my free trial of VideoStudio ends.
Here is an example of almost exactly what I want:

Indeed difference matte is the tool, I used it ~25 years ago on ~250000$ system, that used 48 486 cpu'scheesycow5 wrote:I don't want a ghost effect, though. I did some searching and it looks like the method is called difference matte. Almost all of the tutorials were for After Effects, though.

Hi
The man there has been recorded on a green screen
the green screen then being made transparent
a new background containing the text added.
Two videos blended together.

Maybe that video used a green screen, but I think this one actually uses the technique I'm interested in: https://youtu.be/V-bKUyMMYqo
