Post by Michael REMY »

hi,

i have a bunch of scanned photos who contained the noise of the paper texture.

i own PSP x8, is there a filter of thing to do to clean & remove that kind of noise in the photo :

Moire Pattern Removal does not work fine, it produces a blurry effect...

mine is not moire liek big poster in the subway, mine is the paper texture.

mine does not contain white between dots, it contains strage rounded shape (like a star) in a near-color of each dot.

Hi Michael,
I'm not sure it is the paper texture because paper texture was "regular" (the same "pattern" on all the surface). And I see your pattern is different between dark areas and light areas. It seems it is a printed photo not a "real" photo. Printed photos have this "rounded" pattern (offset printing or some laser copier).

If it is an old photo with a real paper pattern, you must scan at 600 or, better, 1200 DPI and use a Fourier Transform plugin to get rid of the regular pattern.
If it is a printed photo, I think this "rounded" pattern is very difficult to remove without loosing sharpness.

I have found that the 'only' way to address these 'texture' issues is at scan time. Best to avoid them in the first place. Editors such as PSP can only do so much.

Your photo does not contain "noise", and it does not show "paper texture".

I agree with Jean-Luc that the pattern is the dot pattern of a printing process.

A Fast Fourier Transform plugin, used as part of the correction procedure, can work wonders on regular patterns like the one in your photo (as J-L suggested):

After working with the FFT plugin on a second copy of the image, I used the DeScreen filter in my image editor of choice (it's not PSP...) and then copied the result as a layer onto the original image. Used the blend mode of "Luminance", and voila!

Looks good, Ken. Do you know if the plugin works with PSP basically using your instructions in the Photoline group? And do you need the .dll files in the plugins folder if you already have them in your System 32 folder?

EDIT: I've answered most of my queries. It does work in X7, and the dll files don't need to be in the folder if they are already in the System 32 folder. So now just have to find time to work on an image in X7 and see if your instructions can be adapted to the tools in X7. :-)

Hi Joe,

I've had mixed results on various flavors of Windows, so I play it safe and also keep the DLLs in my plugins directory (the same directory level the 8BF files are in).

The only tricky part is having to edit the Red (or Green, depending on which version of the FFT plugin you find) channel. In PhotoLine it's a breeze because you've got a Channels panel. In PSP, you'll have to do the Split Into Channels thing which makes it tedious to fine-tune your editing. But, the general procedure is the same regardless of the image editor you're using.

The image I posted should be considered as a good starting point. You can then use any number of adjustments to sharpen it, etc. For example, in PL I added four adjustment layers -- DeNoise, High Pass (in "Overlay" blend mode), Sharpen and Curves (working in Lab mode to alter the "L" (Luminance) channel) to get to this:

Make no mistake about it, the FFT plugin does not always work great on every problem image; but it certainly is a good tool to have.

I found a version of the FFT plugin that was modified so that both the 32-bit and 64-bit plugins use the same channels, but I don't remember which photography blog had the link to the file. It'll take me a while to find that blog post again, but when I do, I'll update this discussion (as well as the discussion in the PL user forum) with the link.

No. On an image that small, everything was instantaneous. Even on larger images the filter works nearly as fast.
