Hi

Welcome to the forums

You do not give any information of your timelines, it could be the content there that is causing the problem.

Start a new project
Go to Share – Disc – does the program crash
Select the DVD option – does the program crash.

If the program crashes with no timeline content then you should try re-installing the program.

If you rely on your libraries then do a Library Export before re-installing the program.
Even so not 100% that you will not have problems with the library Import?

Original post said "...to produce a CD."
Didn't know Video Studio can do that.

Hi

I assume that to be a typo for DVD or Disc

The program is apparently crashing before the burner module has opened.

But true we cannot burn CD discs nor produce SVCD video.

Hello Trevor

Not sure what you mean "information of the time line"

I have tried all the suggestions but as soon I click on DVD it closes down.

I have reinstalled the programme from my disc but got the same result.

Thanks Inga

Hi Trevor,

Re your advice, Inga tells me that:

quote
Firstly I completely removed all of the Corel programme from my Dell Laptop.
Then I reinstalled it with my X8 programme.
I imported a smart package movie, and it loaded ok.
Then I went to share to try to put it on the CD as soon as I clicked on DVD it, it shut down.
I then stared a new project added music and some text, but again not results, it just shut down.

So reloading the Corel programme seemed to have no affect.
unquote

So, is there anything else, eg operating system related, that could be causing this?

Davidk
PS some time ago, you were very helpful with a class student of mine, Inga. This is she. On this topic, she tells me did reply to you, but there seems no evidence of it. I'm going to have to do more work on how student users get help in the forum.

Edit update
PPS I composed this because Inga's response wasn't in the thread when I looked late this morning. and again, this afternoon. But her response is now there and this seems to be a bit superfluous - some response lags on the server?

Hi Igna / David

First I have no idea why the program should crash, but lets test a few things.

As you have installed the program, please go to Help - Check for updates, install any that are available.

You seem to be referring to CD, can you confirm you are using DVD and not CD?

Ok try a quick test

Remove any discs from your CD / DVD drives.
I launch Video Studio – I do not open any projects – my timelines are empty -
When I click Share – I see the Create Video panel
I then choose the Disc option – I see the authoring options - DVD, Avchd, Bluray (only if Bluray Addon is installed) and SD Card
I choose AVCHD which opens the burner module
What happens when you choose AVCHD.

I close the module, then cancel the save option.
I choose DVD, again the burner module shows.

How far do you get with the above process?

Sorry if that is repeating the things you have tried, but removing the disc and having a clear timeline rules out any interference?

Hi users,
I was going to make this thread as I have the exact same problem.
I have been working on a project, which I burned to dvd late June or early July. Unfortunately, I had muted my video for the first part, so I needed to re-create the dvd from the same project.
Due to time-lack, it took some days before this task was tried..
But now with problems:
After it has loaded my project (states 100%), VS crashes.
Between my successful dvd-burn and my faulty, I have purchased the blueray option, but after install (on July 8th), I checked how it worked (without actually burning a disc, though), and everything looked exactly as on the dvd menu and no crashes.
I have tried:
- Creating a new project from scratch - now the "create dvd" crashing when DVD-button is pressed (where you can choose between DVD/AVCHD/BLUERAY)
- Loading a project from March, which I have burned several times - VS crashes on click on dvd
- Reinstalled VS x8 without installing the blueray extension (but of course updating to latest version)- VS crashes on click on dvd
- Making more space on my computer (which I doubt could be the reason as it was working on the same computer early July) - VS crashes on click on dvd

Now - from the above answer, I tried creating the dvd from a blank project - this gave me success! I loaded my two vsp files and could start the burning. Unfortunately, all my menus will have to be created all over, but this is a working work-around. Anoying, though!

Hi

You should try another workflow

1 / Open the project in the timeline, complete the editing
2 / Share – to create a new video file of your project.
For DVD that will be Mpeg2, use suitable settings will make a DVD compliant file.
3 / Start a new project to clear the timelines.
4 / Share Disc – DVD opens the burner module – add media adding the file made in 2 above
5 / Create the menu
6 / on the last page choose to create ISO—deselect create Disc.
The burn process should start with Convert Menu, as you are now using a Compliant video file there is no Convert Title, burn process much quicker.
7 / Play the ISO using VLC media Playerto test quality, if ok
8 / burn Iso to disc using Tools Burn from Disc Image

Hi Trevor,
I will try that the next time- saving time could be great :-)
Thanks!
(still weird though, that the create dvd is suddenly not working from an existing project)

Hi

I agree it is strange, it could be because of using an older project, maybe created before X8 SP3, very difficult to prove?
Shouldn't happen???

Rendering the project to a video file is the way i have always done, along with others on the forum.
It is the best way, overall takes the same amount of time, burning does not recode the video retaining quality.
creating an ISO saves creating those coasters, can burn multiple discs al same quality.

Hi Trevor,

Inga has had various delays on her reply. But she's been working at it and her emails to me are giving evidence of frustration (words like 'old' and 'I'm over it' have surfaced: she just wants it to work. So, to summarise:
- before the re-install, she was able to get the burn module open with AVCHD as the selected type, without crashing. Did not go further than that: the project was for a DVD of her daughters hen's night.

After the re-install, in class, we
- opened X8 clean (no vsp) and checked that the new X8 installation was fully updated: yes
- then selected the share mode. Selected the disk icon in the vertical option bar - software did not crash. Previously I had seen it die at this point.
- then chose the DVD type icon in the horizontal list, and the software did not crash.
So, some progress at least. The burn module when opened did allow import of clips.

She lately reports that she can burn a DVD that plays on 1 computer but not another, and gives a not properly formatted message on a TV player.

I expect I'll have more in a fortnight.

Hi David

That’s good news, it appears that the crash instances have been fixed.

You mention selecting AVCHD and also DVD, which did Inga use.

If DVD then I would expect it to play on all devices providing the pc has a DVD drive and not the old CD drive?
If Avchd was used then it is Bluray standard on a DVD disc, for that we do need a Bluray Player on PC and TV disc player.

A standard DVD player does not support AVCHD which could be reason for the “formatted” message?

Trevor,
Inga was experimenting to see what did work, before re-installing. Selecting AVCHD without crashing strongly suggested to me that something in the DVD option was the cause of this, and she did not proceed beyond that because I had advised every one the class about the issues of using that mode - restricted play duration of the resulting disk, and a need to use a blu-ray player to read it. This more a case of finding what did work at the select the burn module level.

After re-installing, and getting some progress with the new install and burning a disk, as far as I know Inga has only used DVD as the burn option. Why the resulting disk plays on 1 Pc but not the other, and not all on the TV player, is something I expect to be diagnosing when she is next in class.

Re: X8 Crashing while rendering

Trevor,
I am getting despairing emails from Inga, that this crashing problem has returned. I have asked her for more details, but in the meantime I am thinking that there is more than VS involved. That OS clust******ck that MS perpetrated on VS in the Feb monthly updates comes to mind. Inga was commenting in class from May onwards about this issue, and a for a short while a workaround was to create a disk image and then use another program to burn a disk from the iso file. That became unusable when the crashes occurred before the burn module opened. If she had not needed to burn a DVD in the early part of the year, any impact of those Feb updates on X8 under win10 may not have been obvious.

To the best of my knowledge at this point, Inga is running windows 10 on the machine that is affected, and the version data of her X8 installation matched the one on my win7 machine. I know win 7 users had to download and apply a hotfix before they could even start any version of VS and my recollection is that other OS version users were reporting a range of different issues: some had problems others did not.

Does that hotfix Corel released for X8 last Feb (I used it to get my X8 running again) reflect in the version detail numbers, and does that hotfix also need to be applied when using X8 under win10?

Can you suggest any other impact from win10 might have on X8?

David
