i doesn't have "Open with" in explorer when many selected
hi,
in my X8 updated there is a strange bug i didn't have in my old x3.
in windows explorer (i am under w7 x64 updated), when i select one file and use the contextual menu, then Open with, i rightly have the "open with paintshop pro.." item in the menu.
but, when i select tw files or more (like 2 jpg image files), then i does not have the "open with paintshop pro.." item in the contexctual menu !!
what is that strange bug ?
Moreover,
with my old x3, Open with PSP was in first position in the contexual menu whereas now in x8, it is cascaded so i need to go in "open with" and select PSP in the sublist items....
is there an option in the preference to set this right ? you know a thing like "windows explorer integration" like in Winrar options preference where you can define which "item" you want in the explorer menu.
i hope this bug will be fix soon because it is very boring !

Have you updated your default programmes in Windows 7? When you choose X8 to be the default programme, you should see it in Open with.

When the 'open with' box opens and you select PSP is there not a tick box in that dialogue box which says "always use this program" - check that

i don't want it may be the default program because i prefer another one (a viewer software on Dbl click).trueblue wrote:Have you updated your default programmes in Windows 7? When you choose X8 to be the default programme, you should see it in Open with.
That is why i did not associate JPEG image to PSP when the installer asked me to.
As i said, the problem only happens when i select many files !

Re: i doesn't have "Open with" in explorer when many selecte
I never tried to open multiple files from the context menu of the Explorer, just singles, so I never noticed it until I tried it now.
-Select one image file, right click, click on 'Open with...' in the context menu, and chose the program to open with. PSP versions are included in the options, as well as Windows viewer and the 'choose another program/app' option.
-Select two or more image files, right click, and 'Open with...' is not present in the context menu at all, with or without Paintshop Pro.
A little research found me this:
"Microsoft forbids users from easily opening files in a non-default application (that's the Open with... thing) when any more than a single file is selected, including selections of multiple files that all share the same file type."
-My note: Default applications are those at the top of the context menu, Preview, Edit, etc.
So this is normal Windows behaviour, at least for Win 7, 8 and 10 that I found, so I'm pretty sure we can assume 95, XP and Vista as well, whether you're using PSP X3. X4, X5, X6, X7 or PSP X8. Not a Corel bug but a Windows 'feature'.
And not a change from X3.
A little more reading found me a registry edit that changes the default Edit option of the context menu from MSpaint to PSP and leaves the default Preview option at whatever it is.
-I tested it myself because what the heck, leaving or losing the factory default MSpaint from a menu is no problem for me.
-I tested it with PSP already open in Windows because I didn't feel like waiting for the click to open PSP first and then pass on the image(s). So that may not work too well.
Disclaimer and W A R N I N G: do not do this at home unless you're familiar/comfortable with a small registry edit.
The registry key is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command
-note: this key comes after all the system. (system dot) keys in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT part.
-'Edit/Find' "SystemFileAssociations" without quotation marks is faster than scrolling.
the default value is: "%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"
-including all quotation marks, because spaces without them are a no no in a path. "%1" passes the full path and name of the image file itself to the program.
the new value in my case is: "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X7 (64-bit)\Corel PaintShop Pro.exe" "%1"
-you'll find program path in the Properties of the shortcut you use to start PSP. Just add a space and the "%1"
-again, include the quotation marks.
-drive letter depends on your system and program path depend on which PSP version you use, of course.
Now I can right click on an image file or select multiple files, and chose Edit at the top of the context menu, and it'll/they'll open in Paintshop Pro. After upgrade to X9 when I get a new PC. I'll have to change it to the new program myself.

as i said, before i updgraded to x8, i use X3 and there was not that problem at all.
i remember having 'edit with or open with" PSP in the menu (so i didnot have to go into Open with sub menu)
so, i guess it is a thing which is missing from the installer...

Re: i doesn't have "Open with" in explorer when many selecte
I tried your trick with three files selected in a Windows explorer box.
Right click using XP showed :
Open with Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X4
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X5
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X7
(These would open all three images in the version selected)
Open With >
and in the submenu were
Corel Paintshop Pro X4
Corel Paintshop Pro X5
Corel Paintshop Pro X6
Corel Paintshop Pro X7
Paintshop pro 8
Paintshop Pro X2
(These would only open 1 image in the version selected except for Jasc PSP8 which would not open any images.)
With Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 7) and 3 images selected Right Click showed:
Open with Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X4
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X5
and no Open With >
In each case X3, X4 and X5 opened the three images.
With only one image selected I get:
Open with Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X4
Open with Corel Painshop Pro X5
and Open with >
and the submenu shows
Corel Paintshop Pro X4
Corel Paintshop Pro X5
Corel Paintshop Pro X6 (32 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X6 (64 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X7 (32 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X7 (64 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X8 (32 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X8 (64 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X9 (32 bit)
Corel Paintshop Pro X9 (64 bit)
In any case I would not use this method for more than one image anyway.
If I am using this method to open a file and a version of PSP then it means I have a Windows Explorer Window with those files showing and open. It is then simply a matter of dragging any extra selected files into the workspace when and as needed.

Re: i doesn't have "Open with" in explorer when many selecte
ok, so, this is a bug from the installer X8 which did not create the registry key to install the item in the explorer shell menu on Win7 X64 (i am not on Win10) whereas the X3 did that with sucess.
so, i guess i have to find a free software to add this extension myself in the explorer shell menu.
here the best explorer integration i've seen in 10 years (from Winrar) :
you chose the root menu or a sub menu
you chose the option (imagine for PSP : print with PSP, Edit with PSP, ..etc)
i hope X9 will think of that...

What you need is a context menu editor.

A warning. If you go the the windowsclub link make sure to read the comments before downloading any of the software. There are several comments, for example, about the Filemenu Tools software that is listed that indicate it has lots of crapware and one comment says it installs a toolbar which can't be removed.hartpaul wrote:What you need is a context menu editor.

Re: i doesn't have "Open with" in explorer when many selecte
well,
As the developper or the packager of PSP installer did not exploite well InstallShield product, i found myself a safety solution to nearly solve my needs like X3 :
- i create a shortcut of the corel psp application exe file (a .lnk file)
- i put a copy of that lnk file into my SendTo folder (C:\Users\~\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo)
and now, when i want to open multiple pictures files in PSP, i just select them and go into the contextual submenu SendTo and chose Corel PSP !
and it runs !
i would prefer to not have a submenu, but that way runs.
