VSx6 Unspecified Error when Burning a Dual Layer DVD

Post by jblackwell »

Hello,

I am having an issue when I burn to a DVD+R DL. During the Video/Audio Multiplexing I get to 99% and then I get an "Unspecified Error" [5.0.0]. I have tried three times and have not been successful on 3 DVDs. Is there any way to just make a project without burning to a DVD to see if it works?

I am using VSx6 and I have the latest service pack installed. I have an empty Video Studio Project and I go to share and click "Create DVD". I then add video that is already rendered to be:

MPEG files
24 bits, 720x480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max 3000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

I check the Do not convert compliant MPEG Files. My DVD menu is using the thumbnails and has no motion menus, I'm simply just selecting a frame to show in the thumbnail.

One thing I did notice is that when I click on burning options then About for my drive, the following window pops up:

Corel MMC CD/DVD Writing Plug-in
Version: 3.7.21.385
For MMC Compatible Drives:
CD-R, CD-RW
DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW
BD-R, BD-RE

I do not notice anything about Dual Layer.

My project is a family video and actually it was too big to fit all on one DVD so I have split it up and I was able to burn to a regular DVD-R with no issues and it works in my DVD Player. I am using the same method to burn this DVD the only change is that I'm selecting the DVD 8.5G option. Once I hit burn for the DVD+R DL it just keeps locking up right at the end. My DVDs are showing burn marks when I look at them, but the DVD will not load on my computer or DVD Player. I do not want to continue to just throw away junk DVDs.

Hello

Sorry gotta ask - do you actually have a dual layer DVD burner - you can't use any old burner or discs

It is not necessary to actually burn a DVD to check your project - on the final screen of the create disc module (3. Output) you can choose to make a disc image file (.iso) or to make DVD folders. If you don't see those options click on the double down pointing arrows at the extreme right edge of the burner module window.

Choose to make the .iso and a single file will be created which you can then play in the free VLC player - which will play the file on your computer exactly as if it were a DVD player

if all looks well you can then burn the .iso file to a DVD - some versions of Videostudio have the option to burn .iso files but not all check "Tools >> burn from Disc Image"

Hi,

Thank you for this information. I believe my drive can burn a dual layer according to the specs, although I have never tried on this laptop before. I have done DL's on my old desktop computer but since upgrading to the laptop a few years ago I have yet to have a need to burn a DL until now. My CD Drive is:

TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208DB <-- I got this from my system information under Components: CD-ROM: Name:

When I google that name I see Key Features :
· Max 8x DVD read/write
· Multi-Format: DVD+/-R, DVD+R/-R DL, DVD+/-RW and DVD-RAM
· S-ATA interface
· Buffer Under Run Protection

It says it can do DL... again, I've never tried with any software to burn a DL until now.

As for creating the project, I could not find that .iso button! I had been looking for a while, never even noticed the double arrows. I knew my older versions of videostudio had it I just couldn't find it in this version! I have now rendered using the burn to .iso feature and the project completed and plays on my laptop in the VLC player.

I think tried to burn the image to disc and I again got an error message: The disc image did not burn successfully because an error occurred (error code 0x8007045d)

Is there a way to verify if I can really burn DL DVD's with my laptop?

Thank you

Many of the users on the forum have tried DL's without a lot of success. Some - in years past - would focus on a particular brand, but there are some steps you absolutely must do:
1. in the burn module,
a) ensure that the DL disc is recognized/specified 8.4Gb, and
b) ensure that the size estimate bar at the bottom is NOT NOT in the yellow or red zone. If it is, go back to the set up and change the bit rate down, until the estimate is wholly in the green.
2. before burning, in step 3 ensure that the burn rate in the drop down listbox is equal to or less than the rate the disk is spec'd for. the spec rate will be on the disk and the pack they came in.
3. ensure the amount of space available in your working drive (see preferences) is more than you will require from the final disk - the rendered file is assembled there and then burnt to the disk.
4. the long wait on 99% is generally the cleanup phase - temp files removed etc. You may find that if the process breaks after a long wait here, the disk itself is actually done and will play.

But generally, DL disks that I've burnt have done fine on side 1 and failed thru read errors (generally, image pixelating, freezing on screen) on side 2 - ie on reading back the deeper layer. Found out that hard way when the playback breaks at what turns out to be the point when 4.7gb of file has been processed and we are in the deeper layer and next part of the file. I eventually gave up on DL and use Blu-ray when I need that sort of capacity.

As to whether the nominal burner can actually burn a DL disk, you should contact the manufacturer of either the disk drive itself or the laptop, and get some advice from their specialists. They may be able to suggest a way to burn a disk successfully without involving a specific application package.
