If you have a firewire port on your laptop, you can connect your dv camcorder, put it into record mode / turn it on. You should be able to capture the live video (what the camera sees). You camcorder might timeout after "x" minutes (and auto shutoff). If it's pludded in, it might not auto-shutoff, or there might be a menu option to make it always stay on).

DV .avi will require about 13gb per hour -- so make sure you have plenty of HD space. You might do better with an external HD (connected via USB2.0 or Firewire).

To add to George's post, pass-through encoding is available in many, but not all, DV camcorders. Even models that have this feature in other markets generally have pass-through encoding disabled in firmware if they are destined for sale in the European markets because of higher import tarrifs.

To use pass-through encoding, you generally have to put the camcorder in playback mode (the same mode used for playing previously recorded tapes). Remove the tape from the camcorder, and press the Record button. On some camcorders, removing the tape will also disable the automatic turn-off that is designed to protect the tape and heads from damage that results from the heads sitting on a stationary section of tape.

As far as recording in UVS is concerned, you should record in DV AVI format and not attempt to transcode to MPEG2 on-the-fly. Few PCs have the necessary horsepower to keep up with the massive amounts of data -- if the CPU isn't fast enough, the recording will be interrupted after a few minutes when the transcoding buffer fills up.
