HI...
I am running Videostudio 9 ultitmate 64bit. No matter what I do, I can not create a DVD of my project that plays in a regular DVD player. They all play fine on any computer though. I created 12 that I thought would play on the DVD player that is on my entertainment system. Of the 12, only 7 played on it. I gave each of my brothers three happy that they would be able to play them on their own systems. NO WAY... None of them played. But like I said, they all played fine on their computers...
What am I doing wrong?
Please advise... or is this just a hopeless cause.. I have tried both DVD-R and DVD+R blanks with the same results
Cheers and thanks
Pierre

Re: DVD creation = coaster creation
To add my cents worth, since making DVD's of movies edited with VS is a large part of what I do . .
When setting up to burn the DVD, in the author module step 3, make sure you have the burn rate set to match your actual dvd disk blank. Most blank DVD's will have a speed spec on it/them. (for comparison, Blu-ray typically are 6x, but they are not DVD's as such. CD's can be 52x. Nevertheless the same principle applies - don't burn faster than the disk is specified for). The DVD blanks I typically use are 16x. However, the burn module defaults to MAX, which is a lot faster than 16x. So, click on the burn rate box - down arrow beside the MAX item - and choose a matching speed from the drop down list. If you just take the defaults at this stage without adjusting the burn rate, you get seriously corrupted data on disk, which seems to be what you have. I too made lots of coasters until this point was understood.
This item applies to what ever software is burning your disk, in any mode. For example, using the VS author module to create a disk image (an iso file stored somewhere on your hard drive) gives you just another electronic file. When you use VS or any other tool (eg ActiveISO or Burnaware) which will burn a disk from an iso file, adjusting the burn rate to match the blank disk before you start the burn is still a necessity. If the the software does not allow an exact match, TAKE THE NEXT SLOWEST OPTION from the list.

Re: DVD creation = coaster creation
Thank you all for your replies... I must apologize for taking so long to get back to this. I was away for a while. You have asked me to describe how I did what I did. That is a bit hard to do because I did so many different things to try to make it work. I tried one thing and those DVD's were not even readable on my DVD player on my TV.. Then I tried something else and something else until I was able to make those 12 or so of which only 7 worked on the TV. Keep in mind all of them played on my computer. My brother took 4 of those and was not able to play them on his TV. I called him yesterday and asked if he actually got to see the movie on his computer. He said they wouldn't even play on his computer. His daughter was home visiting and is computer savy.. She was able to make one of them play. I haven't had a chance to ask her what she did to make it work...
Needless to say.. I am doing something drastically wrong. This is only a 10 minute movie
Is there some tutorial anywhere that can tell me how to make a DVD (not blu ray) that will play on a player on a TV and a computer.. I don't need the big menu since this is the only thing on the disc
thanks again
Pierre

Re: DVD creation = coaster creation
Hi Pierre
First there should be nothing you do using Video Studio to affect the disc playing, (bold statement) your process may affect the quality of the movie.
Your discs should play and as you are having problems then I would suspect your hardware, the disc types or your CD/DVD disc drive.
Ok
By controlling our process we can view the quality of each stage upto and including burning a disc.
These are the steps I take in editing the project to burn a disc.
1 / Add my video files to the timeline making sure the project properties match the video files properties. It may be that the video file is not DVD compliant and will need converting to Mpeg2.
2 / edit the project
3 / Render the project to a compliant DVD Mpeg2 video file using a suitable template, Video studio provides some templates via Share Mpeg2.
This is the default template, I would modify this for your 10 minute project and to match your original video properties, this will help with retaining quality but again should not affect the disc playback.
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First ( change to match our original video files properties)
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps) (change to Constant for durations under 60 minutes)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
4 / Play the new video file on the pc to check quality, I use VLC Media Player.
5 / Start a new project – nothing on the timelines , match the project properties to the new Mpeg2 video file
6 / Share – Disc – DVD opens the burner module
7 / (Top Left) Add Media – Add Video file adding the new Mpeg2
8 / Create a menu
9 / Project Settings – make sure Do not convert Compliant Mpeg files is selected.
9a / Project Settings – set the Navigation Controls.
10/ Final page, choose to Create Disc Image – deselect Create to Disc
11 /Press Burn will start process with Convert Menu, we should not see Convert Title.
12/ An ISO will we saved to our hard drive, play the ISO using VLC Media Player to check quality.
13 / Using either Windows ISO Burner or Video Studio – Tools – Burn from Disc Image burn the ISO to disc.
There is no further renders or conversions, so quality will be the same on all discs.
As I suspect your drive may be causing problems you could use the ISO on another PC to burn the disc. At least that will compare the disc drives.
