I have split the audio and I cannot get it back. Before sharing (to mpeg-4) should I get the split audio back in the main top track?file?
I have searched for answer to this with no luck.

If you are intending to render the project to mp4 then just do it - the render will rejoin sound and images
if you have not made any changes to the audio or video and just want to have it look tidy - RIGHT click on the video - on the pop-up click to untick "Mute" - then delete the audio block in the audio track
