Capturing 30-40 minute clips for DVD output

Post by bpvideo »

I am using MSP 7.20 to capture and create DVDS using Ulead disc creator 3.0. I shoot local high school soccer games and am outputing to DVD. Each half is approximantly 40 minutes in length. I do not have to edit the footage at all just simply put on DVD with titled menu.

I am captureing using MSP 7.20 capture and the Ulead Direct show capture plug in. My captured AVI files have the settings below when captured.

24 Bit 720x480 4:3
29 fps
comp rate 6%
PCM 4800 KHZ, 16 bit stereo audio

In previous experience I have found that loading the AVI files into disc creator 3.0 with the project setting below and allowing it to do the MPEG conversion yeilds the best quality (as apposed to allowing video editor creat the MPEG file).

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 4000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo

However the AVI files of these games are exceding the 4.38 GB DVD limit. any suggestions on how I could compress my AVI files ( as little as possible) when capturing using MSP 7.0 would be helpful, or any suggestion on the path I should take for an 80 minute DVD.

The size of the AVI files is not in the least material: it is the size of the mpg files that counts.

I suggest you use DD AC-3 audio at a low bitrate (say 128 kbit/s) to gain a lot of space. For 2 hours of video, you should have no difficulty fitting it in with 4000 kbit/s max, unless you have horrendously large menus.

I suggest you upgrade to MF4: with this you can capture and encode with a better quality than MSP7.2, without having to switch apps. If you keep with MSP, then upgrade to 7.3 with the free SP3.

AFAIK, with settings of 4000 kbps, you should be able to fit 2 hours plus easily. Stay clear of LPCM audio to be on the safe side. I'm not sure about this, but I think NTSC does not like AC-3 audio, use mpg instead.

Sorry, Heinz, you are upside down in Oz :) : NTSC has AC-3 2/0 as its standard.

I'm a little confused... You are asking about an 80-minute DVD (which your settings are ok), but your title says 3 40-minute clips (which your settings are not good for, but switching to AC3 audio like Devil suggested will do the trick).

Sorry that was a typo. Suppose to be 30-40 minute clips( I edited the original post and corrected).

I will try changing the audio settings tonight and see if that will fix the problem, ( I knew I was missing the boat on something), thing that seems odd to me was even if I went with a lower quality setting (lower bitrate) it does not change the project size in indicator it still shows the file is to large over 4.7 gigs.

Thanks for the upgrade info Devil somehow I missed that one! I think I will hold off on the MF4, awaiting MSP 8.0 to see what Ulead may offer with that.

Thanks to everyone, changing to the DD AC-3 did the trick was able to raise the bitrate to 6000 kbs which is what I have found to work well with my football games.

Since 1998, AC3 has also been applied to PAL DVDs as a standard, so it's fair to say that in every respect, AC3 is the audio format of choice for all DVDs.
