I have an old computer, Vista, old version of VideoStudio, VS Pro X6. In the documentation it says it can handle mp4, 4k, H. 264. I put together a video a couple of years ago and it came out great and I love the software.
Last week I had someone shoot a video for me. The files are mp4 but it will not play in VS. I get a message that says This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. I asked the videographer why this might be happening. He said it might be because he used a codec that might not be supported by VS called XAVC S. He also said the high bit rate and resolution might be too much for my computer to handle. I think he filmed in 4k. The resolution is 3840x2160. But as I recall, VS uses a lower resolution to edit and then reconnects to the original when complete for export.
Anyway to work around this?
Thanks

Re: Runtime to terminate in an Unusual way
I don't think so because, as your friend suggested, X6 does not support XAVC-S. That was not introduced until X8. So all I can suggest is that you find a third party video converter that will convert the footage to the other form of 4K mp4 that X6 *will* support.
As for using a lower resolution, that is done by enabling SmartProxy in Preferences. It makes a low resolution copy ("proxy") of the original which can be more easily edited, then when satisfied, the edits are applied to the original. But that still won't work in this case since X6 cannot "see" the XAVC-S originals in the first place, so cannot make the low res copies.

Thanks, this is very helpful. So basically I have to convert the video to something supported. Ok I understand that. (and now I remember smart proxy!) I might just try to convert to H.264. Any recommendations on good software to use for the conversion? Much appreciated.

A lot of members use Format Factory which is a free video converter, just be careful when installing that you do not agree to install the 3rd party rubbish, but it is very good
