Hi
There are about 60 MP4 files and they all have different video properties.
Data rate 6665, 5313, 5899...
Total bit rate 6796, 5441, 6028...
The camcorder has three quality settings and I always have it on highest. There is also a long play option which when set puts footage onto internal memory as MP4. I guess I must have had this set and I also assume this may have compromised the high quality video setting??
Thanks.

Ok. Am assuming that the MP4 video properties I provided are what one would expect.

Right click on a mp4 file
select properties
select details
post the properties in the Video section.
It looks like those mp4 videos all have a variable bitrate. Why are you using the Extra Long Play and not the XP mode (mpg) which will give the same or better quality. The files may be larger but there should be no conversion required and you should be able to use them directly in VS 12
I think your problem stems from incorrect settings in your v2v convertor. Using the default settings will create the poor quality you mention.
Could you upload a short mp4 clip to a website such as Dropbox or OneDrive? We could then play around with that file.

Thanks. You start off asking for video properties which I'd already provided. You then comment on those same properties
Re long play mode on Cam. Just something I've always done, almost by habit. It's never, ever manifested in the poor quality I'm seeing now.
Going to try converting with FF before uploading malarkey.
