Video Studio Pro 8 with GoPro Video- Protune/convert

Post by Pdw911 »

After manipulating a number of GoPro .mp4 (original) videos...I don't see any difference in post processing keeping GoPro Protune on vs off

Same with converting the original .mp4 to AVI using the GoPro Studio and manipulating the AVI in Corel Video Studio

Does this make sense....is there any reason to use Protune and/or converting

If you see no difference, I would leave it off.

As you are probably aware, GoPro itself tends to recommend this since this is what they say on their own website about Protune:
Turning on Protune in your camera causes the videos you take to look less sharp, and you’ll also notice that the colors look more washed out. This is different than what you’re probably used to, which is that crisp, bright look and feel to GoPro’s footage. We stripped this away to give our professional users more of a “blank slate” so they have more freedom in their post-production workflow...

What this means for the every-day user is that Protune footage requires more editing to get that traditional GoPro look. That’s great if you want to spend more time editing your footage to put your own unique spin on it, but if you want to do simple editing and already like the GoPro look and feel that you’re used to, we'd recommend leaving Protune turned off.

I've been a long-time user of GoPro (Hero 3 Black). I have played around with GoPro Studio and used its conversion ability just to see what it did. But I confess I missed the point since I had absolutely no problem at all putting the GoPro original mp4 footage directly into successive versions of Video Studio for editing, and moreover getting excellent results.

One other advantage offered by GoPro Studio is the ability to remove the fish-eye effect of GoPro footage. This is good if you don't have Video Studio Ultimate. But again successive versions of VS Ultimate have included the excellent proDAD Mercalli filter which I find gives me more flexibility in its settings, and can not only remove fish-eye but create more stability if you have been using your GoPro for high-action filming (i.e. with a lot of bumping around).

Thanks...I have, as well, had no issue with manipulating the mp4 files direct from my GoPro....I was using protune for the first time in the last few weeks (tons of underwater video previously without it...I wasn't impressed...not sharp at all

I have Pro X8...I've been able to manage the fisheye with the lens correction set at minus 16.5

Thanks...just trying to confirm what I was seeing
