Can someone please suggest a workable image editor.
For years I have used PSP 10.10 on Windows 7.1 and 8.1. But my 8.1 system has been upgraded to W10, and PSP 10.10 will not install. I have purchased PSP X8, but it will not work, as described below. Irfanview will with difficulty do some things I want, but it has limitations.
In PSP X8 I open the attached file, and can easily add a bit of canvas at the bottom, to accommodate a label. I choose the text tool, leave Presets and action at default, choose Font, Size, Units, Font Style, centre text, remember text. But regradless of dozens of combinations I choose for options such as Leading, kerning, tracking, etc, once the text is postioned I cannot move it, nor can I merge it down (R click causes that layer to dissappear and clicking the remaining layer shows the merge option is not active). If I click the text layer (R side of screen) that layer dissappears and the text goes very pale. The undo button is not visible, so the only option is to close the file without saving, ie I can’t undo to select a smaller font that will fit this text in (or allow editing the text).
See the 2nd screen shot attached, of PSP 10.10 on W7.1, to see what is needed - except that the screenshot process hasn’t shown the 4-headed arrow that is ready to move the text around.

In PSP X text is added via a text-box dialog. So when you click on the canvas the text entry dialog appears and it enters into text edit mode. You then either have to accept the text, or cancel. Same thing in PSPX8. Except PSPX8 edits text directly on the canvas.
If you wanted to you could hold the SHIFT key when clicking with the text tool to get the old textbox back.
Anyway, while typing text you have to accept the text before you can move it. The checkmark on the tool options palette is what you click to accept the text. Once the text has been accepted you can move it around, resize, it, select the layer and merge down exactly like you used to.
The differences are minimal between the two.

If I may pop in on this (and am understanding what you want to do correctly), the text can be moved around after typing it in, by switching to the PICK Tool (Shortcut: "K") and moving it via the center 'pin', where four-way directional arrows will appear on mouseover. To show this, here is a screenshot of text I typed in and am ready to move:
[I had to record a video of the screen and then save a frame from the data stream to show this, as a 'regular screen capture' would not capture the four-way directional arrows that the mouse turns into]
To edit the text again, switch back to the TEXT Tool and then double-click the Text box/vector, to type or further edit your text.
I hope that was what you wanted
