upgrade from 4-5yo or new system

Post by xisix »

Hello VSP gurus, I'm looking for some information about VSP x9.

My dad is using VSP x7 at the moment on a 4-5 years old OEM HP PC here are the spec
i3-2100 2Cores/4Threads @ 3.1GHz
8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1333
iGPU Intel HD Graphics 2000
1TB 7200 HDD

He basically only create (so far) videos based on slideshows with effects, with occasionnal video into it, with music in background. From trips he went to.

He only creates FHD videos for Blu-ray, and sometimes downgrade to SD for some of his friends who don't have BR player and burns it on DVD.

So time ago he was able to burn blu-rays and they were working perfectly. But since either a newer release of VSP or an update of his software, everytime he burns a blu-ray VSP goes throught all the process of rendering, burning etc. but when it comes to read the disc, he only gets a stuttering black screen with glimpse of his projects. Take note that the OS ans x7 has been reinstalled since and it's keeps occuring.

Now he just bought VSP x9 ,thinking it would solve his problem, when it was on sale and asked me if his computer was able to run it, but haven't installed it yet. So I told him ''it should, I can't be sure'' since i don't know the software. And proposed him to maybe upgrade his system to something more modern and more powerful. So here the new hardware that would be changed, give me your thoughts on it, and suggest if the decision should be changed. I have about 1 month or so to make the change.

cpu: upgrade to i7-6700
motherboard: upgrade to chipset H170 (still haven't decided on model but i'm looking at Asus H170-PRO/CSM or AsRock H170M Pro4S)
RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-2133

NOW the real question will he absolutely need a dedicated GPU or he can use the iGPU of the i7-6700 (intel HD Graphics 530). After looking at VSP x9 system requirement I can't find useful information about the DXVA2 VLD mode vertex and pixel shader 2.0 and 512 MB VRAM or the 128 MB VGA VRAM.

Rendering time is not an issue, I've already seen him wait countless hours for his videos to be processed.

Thank you all in advance, sorry for the extremely long post.

Hi

And welcome to the forums

I do not think the burner problems you are experiencing are to do with a 5 year old pc, rather the process / workflow your dad may be using.
Upgrading the PC to find the problem is still there hmmm……..

My reply shows a typical workflow to avoid unnecessary renders, the original poster having similar disc playback issues

Then can you give more information on the video files used, are they recorded using HD Camcorder?
The properties of the project should match the video properties where possible?

Lets see if we can find a problem, then update the pc

You say you have a month to make changes, why? Is X9 the trial version?

thank you lata for your quick respond, haven't had time to try anything yet, or even talk to my dad about it... will do soon.

I know for sure the pictures and some video are from a nikon DSLR, and also videos from a GoPro (can't remember the model).

I don't know if it was just with some projects before we reinstalled windows or all of them. Also I don't know as of right now if his recent projects still produce the same issue.

Lastly, he bought at BestBuy the x9 ultimate box, but haven't installed it yet because he's soon going on vacations and the only time he'll really get back to VSP is in about a month and wants to experience the free tutorials, and lessons given for a 30 days period or something like that.

Hi

As an aside, a windows update in February caused problems in launching Video Studio.
This affected the disc version which needs a hot fix installing immediately after installing the program.
