and for some reason I am not able to open the file that I sent you... getting an unspecified error.

when I smart package and don't zip I have no issue... wonder what this is. I can save the file in VS7 and open that file, but I can't open/extract from zipped file. do you know why?

Hi Ilene

The file you are referring to is your file, I have not attached any files.
I do not know why unzipping the file does not allow you to open the VSP, very strange?

I think you should start using Customise Motion “Save to” to save the paths at least its another backup option. Maybe something to consider for the future.
I can understand why you do use the VSP as it does give a good idea as to what the path is for.
Although when you save a path you can give it a meaningful name, that would help.

Unfortunately creating backups is reliant on that backup being accessed,

Some thoughts…
1 / As you say the Export / Import library has had its problems especially importing to other versions.
2 / Save the edits as a vsp, they should always open in newer versions, certainly the next two versions. One project could contain all your paths / Customised Motions and indeed any Text / Titles

3 / Save the project as Smart Package, again that project could contain all your paths or rather Customised Motions, but relies on VSP,s opening.

4 / Certainly for on going projects Smart Package is a must.

5 / For small projects, intros etc. Export as Template to create an Instant Project Folder

6 / Backup the entire 17.0 folder, just in case.

7 / Install X7 to the new pc

got it ... all good advice!

I do save a lot of paths to the custom file.. sorry if that was confusing.. I just make my own sub folders under custom... ie... a path that might be used as a transition, or a path that might be used for a logo that behaves a certain way.. I try to save the simple ones this way that I will continually reuse..

I will back up entire 17 folder -- this is the one in roaming we just located. I will also save Corel Video Studio folder that is in Documents,

and I will save C:\prog files\corel\X7 set up files --- so that I can re-install X7 on new PC

I will smart package a bunch of older projects that I think I will want to access

fortunately, I decided not to move over the RAID system, so I plan to set up the same way with all my external drives having the same Path, drive letter, so that transition will be more seamless.

will keep you all posted... new PC hasn't arrived yet, but will let you all know as I get going...

User Board is the best -- thanks guys!

Planning to keep it runnning as back up. Will have to link to data on my external data drives over my network but that shouldnt be an issue. This is a necessary evil... Have put off buying a new computer for too long. I also like having a spare to mess around on...
Thanks!

one more thing.... so I found the path style folder that has all the paths ( app data.. roaming etc) -- in that folder are a series of folders with a gazillion characters naming the folder and within each folder there is a vps file and a data file. The folders are all dated... but other than that hard to identify what is what here...

I made a new path and saved it to custom folder just to see if it would appear... I would have thought there would be a folder with todays date, but there is not... any other ideas where this folder is??

also when importing to VS(, how do you keep your data organized if you have no idea what the name of the path is that you are importing ( maybe you set up the orig folders within VS and it will know where to go?

Also... going back to X6 -- I found a folder with Path's that I must have created when I moved from VS6 to 7... I was able to re-import one of these paths so I know that methodology works..

thanks sorry if this is annoying, but it's not spelled out anywhere, so maybe will be helpful to others too...

Hi Ilene

What we are looking at is part of the program software and not user defined, the folder structure is also hidden by windows, so I guess we should not be there.

It is strange that the files do not have an identity, but we can open the VPT file using NotePad where we can see the name we gave it.

But just as quick to import the files path back to Video Studio and view in the library.
More work I guess if you have a lot of unwanted old paths.

For what its worth I just created a new path and it appeared immediately in the appropriate Path Style folder.
Then if we delete the Path from the library the folder in PathStyle is also deleted.

No need for sorry it is not annoying, just a bit of a learning curve

How did u identify the one that you created? Did the folder have the current date? That was precisely waht i did .. Created a new one to see if it was there and i couldnt determine. Just a lot of folders in that hidden folder w random sequence of letters and numbers as title, and inside each folder, just 2 files .. A dat dile and a vps file.
What did you copy to notes, the dat file??

Thanks

Hi Ilene

I viewed the folder in Detail View, that gave me the Modified date, so easy to see the latest folder.
The .vsp file can be opened using NotePad, the text details show the Name.

But it is easier to import to Video Studio, look at the path and delete if you do not like it.

But yes you are correct it is difficult identifying the path details from those folders.

These are the details I see in the Path created using X6. The folder was copy and pasted to X7
