VSX7 upgrade to VSX9

Post by Ilene »

hi..
just wondering if there are any known issues opening up projects created in VSX7 on Win7 machine ( 32bit) on new computer running win10, VSX9 ( 64bit)??

I was a little put off yesterday by Corel Tech Support when they suggested that I might have issues?? Here I am busy backing up libraries and smart packaging projects, getting ready to move over to new system, and I'm concerned that I may have a problem?? that would really be a bummer!

please advise...

thanks

Hi Ilene

I do not think X7 has any problems running on Windows 10 and other users on the forum can confirm that.
So you will be best to install X7 then install X9.

There may be some issues in opening X7 projects using X9 but that probably depends on the edits you have used.

Smart Sound was used by X7 but dropped in X8 for ScoreFitter, if you have used that then you will get a warning when opening X7 in X9. I would convert the Smart Sound clip to Wav.

Boris Grafitti uses a different version and again may show errors?
Mercalli may need rescanning.

I do not think there is anything that will corrupt your projects, just maybe some annoying errors that as far as I know can be overcome.

But your best option is to install X7 to complete your projects if required.
Remember to create copies of the VSP files for use in X9, that way the originals will always open in X7

You could of course install X9 on your old pc to see if VSP do open ok, remember to use a VSP copy?

And indeed create Smart Packages of your on going projects.

I cannot comment on 32 bit to 64 bit programs, relinking should be ok as you are creating Smart Package, I assume similar issues as above.
Any FX filters will be using 32 bit versions, Hmmm.

Again install X7 32 bit on Windows 10.

Ok. Thanks.
I dont use smart sound or boris -- so that wont be a problem.

My projects are all complete on VSX7 -- i just like to go back to grab effects and sequences Ive used... And i save a lot of those in projects that I use to re-build libraries when I upgrade... Copy files from time line into library. These files on time line have custom motion Ive created so its a convenienet way to bring it back... Although time intensive. I cant save them as templates because they are snippets from projects and as of now you can only template a complete project?)

Hadnt thought about installing VSX7 on new machine figured it was too complicated w that windows update issue, but maybe best idea.

Cannot find where my custom motion paths are stored. I have created a lot of folders when i save motion paths. Got to be a easy way to move these presets Ive made over? right now Im copying them to an image on my time line and save as a VSP. Hoping to open that VSP in X9 and will individuallt save it back to new library in X9.

The upgrade process is so laborious!!

Thanks for the advice

Hi Ilene

Zip the "path.VSP" and attach to your post

We can try your VSP in X9 to see what we get, maybe a little peace of mind

Hi, if you saved your paths as "custom" than they are under the PathStyle folder in your user ....17.0\en-US\ folder and the VS_Path.dat file.
if you zip that PathStyle folder we can try it on our 19.

I have saved tons of paths, but they are not in that path folder... I think because I need to export each .vps file... I just did one as an example, but it won't let me attach it here?? When I selected "export path" two files were created A .vps file and a .dat file... I guess these can be re-imported to new computer/new version of VS?

Trevor....
thanks for the help... attached are 2 zip files... I went and cut the files down to show just a few examples, and I substituted "stock" images, because my images are proprietary.. figured that was better for the site...

The first file, VSP with Presets.. this is a project file that I would open in VS10/new computer, and manually copy these thumbnails to a library that I always keep and work from.. I know how they stack and line up and I use and adjust as needed, but dragging onto timeline, copying attributes to files in use and then deleting them.. they are like place markers and contain attributes that I may use over and over, but since they work in tandem, it's easier to save them this way for me than to the custom path library. I could make each one a template too, but this is a little easier for me.

The second file contains images ...just on the main track. In lieu or doing an export of the path ( which I now realize may be best to do) -- I would also do this long hand. I would open ( hopefully in VS10) and then right click on each image, choose customize motion, and then Save to and save it to a folder that I create.

thanks for testing this out for me..

oops my files are zipped to 2.8 and 3 mb and won't let me attach... do you want me to make them smaller or can I PM you... maximum is 2mb?

best

Hi Ilene

Using X7 when you view the Path library - Custom what do you see, are there any paths showing there?

Hi Ilene

Having read your reply I think there is some difference in what we are doing.
You appear to be exporting the project as an “instant project”,
File – Export as Template, is that what you are doing?

That process saves the project content to a separate folder, includes a vsp and a vtp file, that file is used as an Instant Project.
Don’t get me wrong it is a good idea to use Export to backup projects especially if they have multiple elements, a little long winded for a single path.

OK

After setting Customise Motion we have the option to “Save to….”, that saves the details of the Path to the PathStyle folder, if you select Custom then the paths will display in the library.

If you only have two paths showing in the Custom library then you have only saved two paths.

Your projects I assume have been saved as an instant project and will contain all edits including any paths. Individual folders, how many? How far have you got in saving your paths as vtp files?

The folder Asik is referring to is probably the best way to backup your paths.

The folder structure is hidden by windows, but type %appdata% in the Windows Start / Search to find the roaming folder.
Then locate the en-US folder for the PathStyle folder

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\17.0\en-US

Decision time, do you continue saving the project as Instant Project Folders or save the separate paths, maybe a mixture of both?

Just seen your attachment will download and have a look?

A path doesn't need to have an image. it's a path....
Your paths, should be listed in the PathStyle.ini file, a text file.
but VS library saves them also as VS_Path.dat file and yours should be very large.

That VSP opened ok in X9 with Customise Motion intact

Can you open that VSP in X7, right click the image for Customise Motion
Then Save to -- give the path a name.

Now view the Path Library - Custom, your new path will be saved and can be used again.

That is all you need to do to save Paths, then backup the folder as asik said.

Hi Asik

I do not think Ilene is saving Paths but saving the project as VSP or as Instant projects, I am sure Ilene will confirm this. They will do the job but is long winded.
Saving Paths is the better option.

But when concerned in saving the work for use on a new pc then all options give peace of mind.

Re: VSX7 upgrade to VSX9

ok... found all the paths in app data, hidden, roaming, ulead folder etc as trevor said.. I wasn't doing instant projects... I was saving each path I created under customize motion\save as -- just had no idea where they were going... within these folder there is a dat file and a vps file... so when I start using VSX10, I would just import these?

where would I find that pathstyle.ini -- is that something I need??

think I should back up the whole app data file and move it over to new machine?

the other long winded way I save sequences in very messy but works... If I have a series of images, on different overlay tracks, and lets say they are staggered and all have customized motion and it's in the middle of my project... I will manually copy/paste that sequence to a library... then when I want an image in another project to behave the same, I will copy the attributes from images in my library to new images on my timeline... I think the difference is that my work ( montages) I primarily use images, so if I want them to stack, or pulsate, or do something to the beat of my music, then I like to re-use certain behaviors that I've used before, and then just adjust the size or timing of the image based on whatever music I'm using... So now when I move forward to a new version, what is the best way to keep that library... I can add them all to a timeline and copy them back, or I can export the library... most people say that the latter doesn't always work, so I do it long hand.. I don't save these motions paths to the custom motion lib for 2 reasons... one, some of the images are on main track and behave as backgrounds for something on overlay track ( PIP) and easier for me to remember when I see a thumbnail of the image, versus the graphic..

thanks for all the time and advice!
