Pro8 8.10 won't open Pro x8 files - sometimes...
Hi All
I bought Pro x8 for home a few days ago (and loaded service pack 2 I think) but use Pro 8 8.10 at work (on Windows 10). A file that I produced and saved at work opened on x8 at home quite happily (Windows 7), I saved it as a number of different updates but back at work the latest version would not be opened by Pro 8. However it would open some of the earlier versions that I saved at home, so somewhere along the line I either saved it as some other bizzarre file type or something got corrupted, or something else......
Now when I do 'save as' I only ever update a number in the file name - I don't touch the file type, and all I did was add another layer image to my file.
I had seen this issue happen before (adding to my deep regret of buying Pro x8) and this particular episode was also a check to see if I was going mad - but not so.
Can any one tell me if 8.10 and Pro x8 produce incompatible files or if there is an 'issue' about incompatibility that I've not found by googling please?
Cheers
James

Sounds like you need to set compatibility. You didn't mention which file type you are saving as so I will assume it's pspimage. When you select "save as" there is an "options" button on the bottom of the dialog box. This will open a "save options" dialog box and in the center there is a save as drop down box where you can specify an earlier version of PSP.
Hope this helps.

Re: Pro8 8.10 won't open Pro x8 files - sometimes...
Firstly a couple of points. The program here is Paintshop Pro or if you need to abbreviate PSP not Pro.
You mention that you have PSP X8 (actually version 18 -- X=10 + 8 = 18, and that you have for home (on your home computer).
If Service pack 2 is loaded it should read as 18.2.xx.xx when you do Help > About from the Edit mode menu.
You mention that you use Pro 8.8.10 (Is this PSP 8 or PSP X8 ?) at work. PSP 8 only went to 8.1 as far as I know so not sure where you are getting 8.8.10
You can check all the older versions of PSP at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_P ... o_releases
Presumably the file that you saved at work is still there and you copied it to take home and not move it.
Can you repeat the operation Copy the one from work , take it home repeat your operations and Save it (taking note of Kathy_9 's recommendations) and then seif it will open at work again.
It is only if something can be reproduced regularly and others can duplicate that we can suggest that a new bug has been found.
Also as requested more detail on what file type you are saving. Note also that some changes operations in X8 will be lost when making it compatible to earlier versions.
eg if you added in your home PSPX8 adjustment layers that included Fill Light/Clarity or Histogram or Local Tone Mapping , Vibrancy then these are not valid in PSP8.
a Vibrancy adjustment layer gets converted to a raster layer with the name Vibrancy Adjustment layer and the vibrancy effect is lost.

Re: Pro8 8.10 won't open Pro x8 files - sometimes...
Hi All
Many thanks for the replies - last night on my PC at home I created a file with three layers - quite large images. Saved it without fiddling with any of the 'Save' presets and it is listed as IMG_4396.pspimage. I changed the order of the layers and their transparency and then saved it as IMG_4396 1.pspimage. There is a one minute modification time difference between the files the first file size was 49,734kB and the later one is 49,330kB.
At work this morning the first file will open the second won't. I'll try again tonight with a smaller file and if they give the same problem I'll upload them if you think it will help.
Interestingly I note that the first time I save a file at home - that one opens at work, the second time I save a file at home that one (and all subsequent ones) fail to open at work. I don't close the file between saves, it's as if the act of saving the file (using 'save as') corrupts the new file in some way?
Kathy - the options box only gives versions 6 7 8 etc - both my versions are 8 (at least on my work PC) I'll check tonight if I have a finer choice on that program.
Incidentally at work I have Paint Shop Pro 8, version 8.10, which I wrote as Pro 8 8.10, sorry for any confusion that may have caused. I'll check on the version I have at home.
Cheers

Re: Pro8 8.10 won't open Pro x8 files - sometimes...
I'm shooting in the dark here but something may click!!
First file size shouldn't be an issue. I regularly work on 300-500meg files with multiple layers. I Save As many times during an editing session. Resaving with a new file name after x amount of editing. That way I'm saving a 'latest' version of my work as I go.
When you do a save as be extra careful with what version of PSPImage you are saving as. Remember they are all meant to be backwardly compatible. But are they? When you do a Save As check in the options box that Save As is set to the correct version of PSP.
If your version is 8 at work and x8 at home your 8 at work won't open x8 files.

Re: Pro8 8.10 won't open Pro x8 files - sometimes...
Hi all
Forgot my memory stick last week.....
But have now done a controlled test and it looks again that if I create a file here I can take it home and it will open but if I 'save as' (using the default settings) then that saved file will not open at work.
If anyone can analyse these files I'm uploading them - you can see by the times on the files which were created at work (12:40) and which at home (20:44). The files are much smaller and of a single image - confirming your email brucet (thanks for the reply)
So to explain the files:
New single image from work - the original and created at work using default settings
New single image save as from work - the same file created at work changing the name and using 'save as' to do it
New single image from work 1- The file above which opened at home 'save as''d with the new file name
New single image from work 2 - another save as different name
Can anyone else open the last two files on PSP Pro 8 version 8.10??
******* Arrrgh the files are too large at 2.8MB, good grief ......
OK I'll do it all again with a smaller starting file... I'll use all the same names to prevent me having to retype all this again!
Cheers

Can you please clarify which version of PSP you are using on both computers. Is it PSP 8 or PSPx8? Big difference. If it is PSP 8 at work and PSPx8 at home I would guess you are having compatibility issues.

All that information is specified in my first post. What I am trying to find out is whether or not I should just give up trying to use the software I bought, is it my fault or is it the software?
Finally, after much struggling, I can post files smaller than 2MB that demonstrate the issue:
Doh.pspimage - original file created at work (on PSP 8 version 8.10)
Doh 1.pspimage - a 'save as' version of above made at work - both of these open at work and at home
Doh 2 upper.pspimage - this was a 'save as' version of the file above (using x8 at home) No changes were made to the image
Doh 3 upper.pspimage - this was a second 'save as' version of the file above
All of the above files open correctly at home but....
Doh 2 upper.pspimage - won't open at work - it is 'not a valid PSP image file' (according to PSP 8 version 8.10) I note that the file is slightly larger than the original
Doh 3 upper.pspimage - won't open at work - it is 'not a valid PSP image file' (according to PSP 8 version 8.10)
I'll try to attach one each of the files now (good/bad) - I would be grateful if someone could perhaps test them or better 'look inside' them to let me know if it's me or the software!
**** Good grief - files with extension .pspimage not allowed for upload........ ******
Now I know what it's like to be a salmon swimming upstream.....
Anyone know if I can submit these files to someone in Corel by email please?
Cheers

You could try giving numbered steps to show what you are doing for others to duplicate. Then post some jpg screen shots.
Is it also possible to zip your pspfiles and place them in something like drop box for others to look at.

I still believe you need to check what file format you are saving in. If you use PSPx8 at home and save, then try to open those files at work with PSP 8 then PSP 8 wont recognize the new format from PSPx8.
PSPx8 can read PSP 8 files but PSP 8 can't read PSPx8 files.
Check that when you do a 'save as' in PSPx8 that you click on PSPImage as 'save as type'. Then click on options. Note the Version, Save as, dropdown menu. Open that menu and select PSP 8 compatible file.
Not all PSPImage files are created equal!!!

Previous posters mentioned the compatibility setting when you save your image in X8 so it can be opened in 8.
Here is a little video explaining and demonstrating it.

Hi All
Time to hold my hands up and look really sheepish! Yes I did check the OPTIONs button the 'Save As' page, and several times - BUT on the wrong version of PSP! The one on the x8 verision at home has the appropriate 'backwards compatible' selection and, as you would expect, it's all working now!
Thanks all for persevering!
