advice on migrating data to new computer

Post by Ilene »

There have been recent posts on "ideal PC specs" for VS... at long last I have decided to do a major system upgrade...

getting new PC, and NAS ( raid ) storage capabilities ( have had too many PC crashes and drive failures and this was recommended in addition to cloud back up which has saved me!) -- will be running Windows 10 and VS Ultimate X9 ( which I purchased but was waiting to install on new system.

My projects all live on one external hard drive but my general data that is not specific to a project ( video backgrounds, image backgrounds, and some fx) come from folders on various drives including my C.

Looking for best advice on moving over all my data and restoring my project files. The path that VS looks at will be different with NAS system so I will have to re-link the files. I think the folder and file tree format will look identical... but the source will be different. Will I have to re-link every file, or does Video Studio see the first that you re-link and recognize the new path??

The process of getting Video Studio up and running and looking as it did before with all my libraries us truly daunting... I'm not even sure it makes sense to smart package my finished projects since all the paths to the data will be different... ( almost makes me question the whole NAS ( raid) system --- thoughts on if it is worth it?? )

for those interested, the new PC will have the following specs... should hopefully last me a long time!

HP ENVY Phoenix 860st Desktop PC

•16GB DDR4-2133 DIMM (2x8GB) RAM
•3TB 7200RPM SATA-6G Hard Drive
•HP Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2x2 with Bluetooth® M.2 Non-vPro NIC
•Blu-ray Writer and SuperMulti DVD burner
•Windows 10 Pro 64-bit OS
•6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-6700K quad-core processor [4.0GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]
•6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 980Ti [DL DVI-I, HDMI, DP, DP, DP]
•$50 off on Microsoft® Office Professional 2016
•512GB 3D SSD

any and all advice is welcome...

thanks
